German Universities International Student Scholarships and Free Tuition

International students from other countries frequently choose Germany as their study abroad destination. Compared to universities in the UK, USA, or Australia, German universities offer well-known programs for a significantly lower cost. Additionally, a sizable number of scholarships are readily available, enabling international students to enroll in German universities for nothing.

Germany’s Public Universities and Colleges

Beginning in October 2014, all German universities will offer free undergraduate tuition. Universities may impose administrative fees (about 50 euros) or a contribution for the semester in different Federal States. Check this page for the most recent details on tuition costs in the various federal states of Germany.

Future changes to this tuition fee system are possible. For example, Baden-Württemberg, a federal state, charges non-EU citizens enrolled in Bachelor’s, Master’s, Diploma, and state examination degree programs a semester tuition fee of €1,500.

In contrast to undergraduate programs, the majority of master’s or doctoral programs in Germany are fee-based. There are additional costs for postgraduate study in addition to the enrollment and confirmation fees. Fortunately, Germany offers a number of scholarships for master’s and PhD studies.
