Master’s Scholarships: What Are They?

Masters Scholarships are merit-based awards given only to students who have graduated from foreign universities and who have achieved exceptionally high academic standards.

Each year, UNIL awards about 10 scholarships.

The scholarship is provided for the minimum required time frame of the student’s chosen program. With the exception of instances of categorical failure beyond the first year, it amounts to CHF 1,600 each month from 15 September to 15 July (or 10 months per year) for the entire term of the masters (one and a half years or two years depending on the chosen masters).

Candidates are informed that the amount of the scholarship award does not cover the cost of living in Switzerland. It is not a scholarship that is fully sponsored.

Regarding this, we encourage applicants to look over the page regarding the UNIL student’s reference budget.

With the exception of the CHF 80.00 in fees that must be paid each semester, students who are awarded scholarships are exempt from the fixed registration fees for the courses.

Application Process:

You don’t need to apply for the master’s degree at the Admission Office (SII) of UNIL because the application for the Master’s Scholarship also serves as an application for ADMISSION to the chosen Master’s program (and thus as a matriculation form at UNIL).

Master’s Scholarship applicants must apply online and provide their PDF application (see the document labeled “List of documents for an application” in the margin). PDF and incomplete application files submitted through email will not be considered.

Additionally, candidates who hold a bachelor’s degree from a university located in a country that has not ratified the Lisbon Recognition Convention must mail a certified copy of their diploma in a sealed envelope from the institution. Please review the certification copy procedure (see details in the blue box) before proceeding.

Only if the online application was successfully filled out and submitted by the deadline of November 1st (postmark) should the sealed envelope containing the university’s certified copies be sent to the address below.
