University of British Columbia International Students Scholarship

The University of British Columbia’s 2023 International Scholars program is now accepting applications from students. International students can apply for four categories of outstanding need- and merit-based grants from UBC’s International Scholars Program:

Karen McKellin International Leadership Award for the Future:

This award honors outstanding incoming international undergraduate candidates who have excelled academically and shown great leadership qualities by working together, showing empathy, and actively listening to others.

Award for International Students, Donald A. Wehrung:

Honors exceptional international undergraduates who have overcome extreme obstacles to attain academic success and who, without substantial financial aid, would not be able to attend college. They come from poor or war-torn regions.

International Impact Award:

The award is given to outstanding students who have shown leadership qualities and a dedication to finding solutions for issues related to natural resource management and conservation, social justice, equity and inclusion, and climate change, as well as sustainability. Learners from varied living situations and first-generation learners are given priority.

Additionally, UBC Vantage College offers the Vantage One Excellence Award to academically exceptional international students who have not yet achieved the English Language Admission Standard for direct admission to UBC.

Scholars from other countries who choose to study at the University of British Columbia have the opportunity to have a constructive influence on the lives of people in other parts of the world. They are students who have excelled in their academic work, excelled in the extracurricular activities in which they have participated, demonstrated a desire to make a difference on a global scale, and demonstrated a commitment to giving back to the schools and communities in which they live.

• Study Area/Level:

Undergraduate degrees are provided by UBC, with the exception of UBC Okanagan There are several degree options available, including dual degrees, joint degrees between UBC Okanagan and UBC Vancouver, joint degrees with other post-secondary schools, bachelor of nursing, bachelor of dental science in dental hygiene, bachelor of medical laboratory science, bachelor + master of management, and more.

• Amount of Awards: About fifty split among four categories
• Target Audience: International students are the target group.
• Worth of a scholarship:

The UBC International Scholars Program is valued in accordance with your level of financial need. After deducting the annual contribution that you and your family can afford, the total of tuition, fees, and living expenses is used to calculate financial need. The financial data that you and your family supply form the basis of a typical needs assessment.

If you maintain your Canadian study permit (student visa), maintain satisfactory academic standing in your faculty, and continue to demonstrate financial need, your award may be renewed for up to three more years of undergraduate study or until you complete your degree, whichever comes first.

Eligibility Requirements:

Applying to the International Scholars Program requires:

• In order to study in Canada, you must be an international student with valid study permission.
• You have to be coming to UBC after completing your first year at another university or post-secondary college, or you have to be transferring from an approved secondary school.
• Two years prior to the academic year you are applying to, you must have graduated from high school no earlier than the month of June. Applicants for the Winter session of 2024, for instance, must have completed their high school education no sooner than November of 2022.
• The application needs to be for your first undergraduate degree.
• You must exhibit exceptional academic success, such as earning all As or a comparable benchmark.
• You have to show that you have a sufficient financial need to be unable to continue with a UBC degree otherwise.
• You must fulfill the English Language Admission Standard as well as the general and degree-specific requirements of UBC in order to be admitted.

The Vantage One Excellence Award will be given consideration to applicants if:

• If you want to be admitted directly to UBC, you must not yet have satisfied UBC’s English Language Admission Standard. All other eligibility requirements remain the same.
• You have to fulfill the prerequisites for admission to UBC Vantage College, which includes the Vantage College English proficiency criteria.
• Your departure from high school must be immediate.
• To be eligible for the UBC Vantage One Program, you must be starting your undergraduate studies there.

Guidelines for applications:

Your institution or non-profit must suggest you for the International Scholars program, and you must also provide a reference from an academic colleague. Verify if you can be nominated by your non-profit or institution, and let your academic referee and nominator know that you would like to apply for the International Scholars Program. When you apply, UBC will consider you for all the awards you are eligible for; you won’t have the choice of which award to accept.

Please submit your application by November 15th for the International Scholars Program, and by December 1st for UBC admissions. The UBC English Language Admission Requirement must be satisfied by January 31st.
