UK Residents Urge Govt to Seek Visa-Free Travel
The UK Parliament’s website contains a petition to allow British Residence Permit (BRP) holders to travel throughout Europe without a visa.
The petition, which has 23,718 signatures as of this writing, highlights the fact that non-EU nationals with BRP cards cannot use them as travel credentials in European countries. It urges the government to remedy the issue.
Differences in Entry Rules Post-Brexit
As a result of Brexit, there are now disparities in the admission requirements for citizens of the UK and the EU, which will have an impact on both sets of residents.
At this time, visitors from countries that are not members of the EU, such as British nationals, needed to carry a passport that is still valid while traveling to countries inside the Schengen Zone for stays of up to 90 days within a period of 180 days.
BRP: A Secure Immigration Document, but Not a Valid Travel Document
The UK biometric residence permit is a secure immigration document that allows foreign nationals to travel to and show their right to stay, work, or study in the UK, but it is not accepted as a travel document for EU countries.
Government’s Response to the Petition
The government has decided it will not petition the EU to remove the passport requirement for non-EU/EEA persons, including UK residents, visiting Schengen nations. They have repeatedly denied that visas are involved.
Visa Requirements for Britons and Schengen Zone Travel
UK citizens applying for a Schengen visa must present proof of a residence permit valid for at least three months after their departure date.
The Schengen embassies in the UK do not accept Schengen visa applications from visitors or residents of the UK. They must apply for a Schengen visa at their home embassy.
Challenges of Post-Brexit
After Brexit, the UK and EU confront major problems. The ABTA Travel Association said that 69% fewer Britons work in the travel industry in the EU since 2017.
EU Travelers to the UK to Require ETA
Recently, it was announced that EU citizens traveling to the UK next year will need an electronic travel authorization (ETA) costing €12.
This petition may help the UK government boost travel alternatives and mitigate post-Brexit rules.
