Three Canadian cities are among the best in the world for work-life balance

A new study says that when it comes to work-life balance, Ottawa, Vancouver, and Toronto are among the top 20 cities in the world.

The office security company Kisi made the 2022 Work-Life Balance Index. It looked at 51 U.S. cities and 49 places in other parts of the world.

“Rather than being an index of how nice a city is to live in or a list of the best places to work, the study aims to show which cities give their residents the best balance between work and life,” Kisi said in the report.

Over 130 data points were looked at, including the number of remote jobs, the average number of vacation days, access to mental health care, the cost of housing, and the city’s culture and recreational offerings.

On the list, Oslo is first, then Bern, Helsinki, Zurich, and Copenhagen. With a score of 95.51 out of 100, Ottawa is the top Canadian city on the list. It came in seventh place.

Vancouver is the second-best city on the list, coming in at number 16 with a score of 92.23. The next place on the list is Toronto, which comes in at number 19 with a score of 91.12.

Calgary had the worst score out of all the Canadian places on the list. The city got a number of 89.38 and is 30th on the list around the world.

People in Dubai, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and Montevideo were found to work too much more than they should. On the list, “overworked” means that a full-time worker works more than 48 hours per week. People in these cities are more than 16% more likely to be overworked than people in Canadian places, where the number is only 10%.
