About Wheeling University Scholarships
This scholarship application is a one-stop solution to provide access to the majority of Wheeling University’s scholarship programs. However, if there is a particular scholarship program that requires an additional application or material, then you will need to submit an additional application through this application.
Concerning Wheeling University
To “seek God and find in all things,” whether in the classroom, chapel, liturgy, or laboratory, Wheeling University was established in 1954 to educate future leaders spiritually.
The Catholic Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston and the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) collaborated to build the university, which was originally known as Wheeling College. Despite a name change, Wheeling University stays loyal to its history by offering Ignatian-based educational possibilities to its students.
In West Virginia, Wheeling is still the only Catholic university with a campus.
Although the concept of establishing a Catholic college in West Virginia was first proposed in the late 1800s, Archbishop John J. Swint was the one who gave the idea new life and advanced his plan in 1951.
The first Jesuit associated with the college, Rev. Clifford M. Lewis, S.J., started a two-year feasibility study after Archbishop Swint requested it in October 1951. In exchange for the Jesuits running the college, Archbishop Swint offered to finance the acquisition of the property and the construction of the physical plant.
After the Jesuits approved the Archbishop’s plan a year later, the Diocese purchased Mount de Chantal-owned land for the college’s location. Upon arriving in Wheeling at the beginning of 1953, Fr. Lewis collaborated with Archbishop Swint on the blueprints for founding the institution.
The institution staged a groundbreaking ceremony on November 24, 1953, and in the spring of 1954, work on the Swint, Donahue, and Whelan buildings started. A temporary college center was established at the former St. Michael’s rectory and church on Edgington Lane during the summer of 1954 by a Jesuit organizing committee. Rev. Lawrence McHugh, S.J. was appointed as the college’s first president the day after it was formally formed on September 25, 1954.
Donahue Hall, named for the third bishop of the Wheeling Diocese, Patrick J. Donahue, was dedicated on November 21, 1954, with the laying of the cornerstone. This bequest to Bishop Donahue eventually provided funding for Wheeling College. More than 2,000 individuals attended formal dedication ceremonies in October of 1955.
St. Joseph’s Cathedral hosted a solemn high mass to kick off the festivities. Next, there was a vibrant procession from Swint Hall to Donahue Hall, the location of the dedication. Rev. William F. Maloney, S.J., Provincial of the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus, and Archbishop Swint were among the speakers at the event.

The McDonough Center is a resource for all students, not just varsity athletes if you’re searching for a terrific workout. Think of it as your 107,000-square-foot health facility. You can play racquetball, work out at the fitness center, swim laps in the pool, run laps on the indoor and outdoor tracks, shoot hoops in the gym, or engage in some cardio. There are lots of activities available to make sure your body and mind are in good health.
