Program Overview

NINE DTP conducts an annual competition for studentships to recruit and select exceptional postgraduate researchers for study at Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria, Teesside, Sunderland, Queen’s, and Ulster Universities. We conduct an open competition for the allocation of studentships, focusing on the caliber of candidates and their proposed research, in conjunction with a related Action for Equality initiative that provides two full scholarships to designated underrepresented groups.

Our studentship competition is structured to ensure maximum openness and transparency, with funding decisions grounded in explicit assessment criteria. Further information regarding these requirements can be found in our guidelines. NINE DTP scholarships provide 50-55 fully funded postgraduate studentships annually for both full-time and part-time study.

To apply for a NINE DTP studentship, one must

  1. apply to the intended university
  2. Coordinate with the proposed supervisory team to submit a nomination form (along with supporting documents) to the department’s postgraduate research director, who will forward the nomination to the university’s pathway lead. Nominations that are shortlisted by the route are subsequently submitted to the main studentship competition.

The NINE Northern Ireland and North East of England DTP Scholarship (fully funded) is available for postgraduate and research-level programs at Queen’s University Belfast, Durham University, Newcastle University, Ulster University, Northumbria University, Teesside University, as well as the University of Sunderland.

Educational Credentials and Professional Experience

A first or commendable upper second-class bachelor’s degree in the social sciences, or significant equivalent experience, is required of applicants for a studentship.

However, a master’s degree is not required for enrollment in the NINE DTP. If your PhD studies require complete or partial master’s level training, we will integrate it into your degree. You can choose between full-time or part-time studentships. For additional details regarding the terms of awards, please go to the Awards page.

Be aware that receiving funding does not guarantee admission to your preferred university, as each will have its own admissions procedures and eligibility requirements.

Candidates for the Action for Equality scheme must meet these criteria and be UK-domiciled individuals of Black, Asian, or mixed Black or Asian origin.

Initiation of Awards

Eligibility for a studentship in the current recruitment cycle requires an application for a postgraduate program commencing in October 2025. Awards are non-deferrable, and selected candidates are presumed to commence their studies in October 2025, barring exceptional circumstances.

Home / Status of International Students

Since October 2020, UKRI has allowed candidates to apply for NINE DTP funding regardless of their residency status or nationality.

Applicants and supervisors must be cognizant of the following:

  • NINE DTP is permitted to allocate a maximum of 30% of total studentships to overseas candidates, as delineated by the ESRC and UKRI.
  • In the 2024–25 academic year, UKRI will grant all scholarships at the full studentship rate, which is £4,786 for fees and £19,237 for stipend.
  • In instances when students must pay foreign student tuition costs, the department or institution must finance the disparity between the UKRI fee rate and the international tuition fees, or alternative funding sources.
  • NINE DTP is unable to provide funds to address this discrepancy; however, historically, overseas students awarded NINE DTP assistance have had the cost difference subsidized by their enrolling university. Consequently, international applicants should not hesitate to apply due to NINE DTP’s inability to immediately cover international fees.
