Effective with the release of this position announcement, WEC is seeking applicants for the position of a Steel Erector to be based in its Project Site in Ahafo.
Reporting Responsibilities
The Steel Erector reports to the Structural Supervisor on the project.
Role Purpose
A Steel Erector is responsible for employing and utilizing appropriate methods and techniques, manual and mechanical processes to build structures to conform to the client’s specifications.
Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s)
- Timely completion of all erecting jobs without injuries and errors.
- Effectively maintain all required safety and quality standards.
Working Environment/Exposure to Risk
- This job typically requires moderate to heavy labour and includes, but is not limited to, heavy lifting (50 -75 lbs.),
- Climbing stairs and structures,
- Carrying and lifting tools and material by hand,
- Working at heights over 6 feet above ground level
- Exposure to extreme temperatures
Responsibilities
- Possess the ability to read and understand drawings and follow safe working practices in the pre-assembly and erection of structural steelwork at low and high levels
- Work according to general arrangements drawing, to ensure correct positioning of steel
- Possess very good knowledge in slinging loads, signal and work with cranes
- Working at height and operating high level access equipment e. Mobile Operating Platforms (MEWP’s)
- Fit prefabricated sheet metal (flashings and trims) and structural decking
- Install roof, vertical and horizontal cladding systems
- Efficient use of the tape measure
- Performs any combination of following duties to raise, place, and unite girders, columns, and other structural-steel members to form completed structures or structure frameworks, working as member of crew.
- Sets up hoisting equipment for raising placing structural-steel member
- Fastens steel members to cable of hoist, using chain, cable, or ro
- Signals worker operating hoisting equipment to lift place steel member.
- Guides member, using tab line rope or rides on member in order to guide it into positio
- Pulls, pushes, or pries steel members into approximate position while member is supported by hoisting devic
- Verifies vertical and horizontal alignment of members, using plumb bob
- Bolts aligned members to keep them in position until they can be permanently riveted, bolted, or welded in plac
Key Relationships
- Internal: Project and Construction Managers.
- External: Clients Representative from Newmont Ghana and DRA.
Judgement and Complexity
Judgement of the jobholder is highly required in the following:
- Being safety conscious in executing the job
Responsibility for Assets
- Tools and equipment under his/her care
Level of Authority
- The jobholder’s authority is limited to making recommendations and seeking approval
Competences Required
- Educational & Professional Qualification:
- Vocational or Technical Training certificate(NVTI)
- Minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience in the construction industry
- Full driving licence E for mobile operating platforms
- Valid Mineral Commission Competency Certificate
- Skills Required:
- Ability to read and write and to keep job records
- Very good Slinger and Signaller
- Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures
- Must be a team player
- Read isometric drawings
- Be able to work to measurement and orientation tolerance
- Knowledge of different hand tools used in erection
- Knowledge of erection tools
- Sound knowledge of company policies and procedures including relevant reporting and administration procedures
- Sound understanding of Company values
- Expressed and implied ethical responsibilities and values
