Spiritualist sentenced to death for killing wife, daughter to pacify idols
“May the Almighty God and Allah have mercy on your soul as I sentence you to death” were the last words of the supervising Judge at the Bolgatanga High Court, Justice Charles Adjei Wilson. This was pronounced when he sentenced Mbawona Tindana, a self-styled spiritualist to death for killing his wife and daughter.
A 35-year-old self-styled spiritualist called Tindana has been standing trials on accounts of murder in opposition to section 46 of the Criminal Offenses Act 1960 (Act 29). However, he pleaded not guilty to his earlier. But currently, he has been found guilty unanimously by a 7-member jury that presided over the case.
Before the pronouncement of the final verdict of the jury, the presiding judge stated that according to section 46 of the Criminal Offenses Act, 1960 (Act 29), the punishment for a person charged with murder is death unless proven contrarily.
Proceedings
After reading the accounts of witnesses and accused in the case in the fully packed courtroom today, Wednesday (June 1, 2022), he asked the jury to excuse the chamber to discuss and make a final discussion. Afterward, they came back and made the final pronouncement.
After some minutes, the jury returned, and one of them on behalf of the other members said “the jury hereby unanimously finds Tindana guilty for dastardly killing his wife and daughter”.
But prior to his judgment, Justice Wilson the accused person’s lawyer if he had something to say. But he mentioned to the court that he had nothing to say.
About the Ruling
Afterward, the judge ruled that, “so based upon the verdict of the jury, I sentence you to death and that you will be confined in the prison for life and that it is only by a presidential pardon that you can be out of jail”.
“May the Lord God Almighty and Allah have mercy on your soul as I sentence you to death” he concluded.
The facial expression of the accused, Tindana, a very energetic young man shows how disappointed he is in his actions.
The family and loved ones of the accused that were present at the court watched Tindana escorted by the security out of the courtroom.
Tindana was then taken away by the Ghana Prisons Service Officers at the Navrongo Prisons to commence his sentence at the Kassena Nankana Municipality.
The fact of the matter as presented a Senior State Attorney, Mrs. Joyce Debrah was that Tindana was married to Abigail Talata Kurug, and had a called daughter Nyapoka Mbawona Tindana. The wife was 25 years old whereas the daughter was just 2 years old.
MORE ON THE RULING
According to Mrs. Joyce Debrah, Tindana is a self-styled traditional spiritualist at Kulpeliga. It is a suburb of Tongo in the Talensi District in the Upper East Region.
The Senior State Attorney mentioned that around 4:30 pm on June 27, 2019, the accused used an axe to cut off the heads of his wife and daughter. The reason is that they are witches.
According to the Prosecutor, the accused sacrificed the daughter with the brains scattered to calm his idols. And left the dead body of his wife about 10 meters away from the idols.
Aside from that, the accused used a machete on his son. But fortunately for him, he was able to escape. The son was sent to the hospital for treatment.
Afterward, the bodies of the deceased were collected and sent to the Bolgantanga Regional Hospital morgue for autopsy. Found at the scene were axe and a machete with blood stains.
The accused was arrested immediately and sent to court after investigations had been completed.
