Schengen Visa Applications Surge to Over 7.5 Million: Reports
In 2022, Schengen visa offices around the world received a total of 7,572,755 applications for short-term visas. This is a big jump from the previous two years.
SchengenVisaInfo said that the number of visa applications is still 55% less than the number of visas that were processed in 2019 before the Coronavirus breakout.
Schengen Countries Record a Decrease in Visa Applications
The Schengen countries said that in 2022, a total of 5,939,896 visas were given out, while 17.9% of visa applications were turned down. This rejection rate is a lot higher than the 9.9% rate that was seen in 2019.
In 2019, the Schengen countries received 16,955,541 applications. In 2020 and 2021, the number of applications dropped to 2,924,365 and 2,926,104, respectively.
France Leads the Way in Visa Applications
France is still the Schengen country that gets the most visa requests. A quarter of all Schengen visa requests are sent to French offices, consulates, and visa centers. France is right behind Spain, and then Germany comes next.
When it comes to how many Schengen visas are asked for, these three countries have been at the top for years.
Türkiye Occupies the First Spot
With 778,409 applications, Turkey is now in the first place. Russia is in second place with 687,239 applications, and India is in third place with 671,928 applications. In 2019, Russia, China, and India were the top three places where people wanted to work. But in 2022, China is at the 22nd spot on the list.
But even though Turkey is at the top of the list, the number of Turkish people asking for Schengen visas went down from 906,862 in 2019 to 778,409 in 2022.
The Drop-in Visa Applications from Russian Citizens
In 2022, most visas were given to Russian people by Spain, Italy, and Finland. But if things keep going the way they are, few Russians will be able to get visas by the end of 2023.
The Reason for the Drop in Visa Applications from Chinese Citizens
China is a different story because the main reason for the drop in the number of new Chinese applicants for Schengen visas is that China itself has made it harder for people to get visas.
The Bureaucracy of Schengen Visa Applications
To get a Schengen visa, travelers have to go through a number of steps and gather a list of papers. Recently, travelers have been getting more and more angry about how many of these papers they have to bring to the visa centers.
They have been asking the EU government to get rid of the red tape that makes getting a visa hard and takes a long time.
