Newmont Ghana has donated 45 HP Laptop computers, 15 Samsung Galaxy Tablets and Pencils and 15 Memory cards to support brilliant but needy students at the College of Engineering (CoE) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on Friday, 11th February 2022 at the Council Chamber.
The Regional Manager of Organisational Effectiveness, Mrs. Georgina Bartels, presenting the items on behalf of Newmont Ghana, revealed that the donation was as a result of the partnership that exists between both institutions, part of which is to provide internship and mentorship opportunities.
She added that in the wake of the pandemic and its effect on teaching and learning, Newmont Ghana decided to respond to the call of the Vice-Chancellor’s project to Support One Needy Student with One Laptop (SONSOL), hence, the need to present the laptops to assist brilliant but needy students in KNUST.

Mr. Daniel Egya-Mensah, the General Manager, Newmont Akyem Mines also indicated that the increasing numbers of students at the College informed the company’s decision to support the University. He pledged his outfit’s continuous support for the industry-academia partnership to equip students with the requisite skills needed for the job market.
Receiving the laptops on behalf of Management, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ellis Owusu-Dabo mentioned that the effect of the pandemic on teaching and learning propelled University to do things differently, hence, the laptops received would go a long way to help beneficiaries in their online and face-to-face teaching and learning; an approach the University has adopted.
He urged them to work closely with the various departments within the College and invest in establishing state-of-the-art laboratories to help bridge the practical knowledge gap between industry and academia.
Professor Owusu-Dabo commended the Provost of the CoE, Professor Mark Adom-Asamoah for contributing their quota at the college level to solicit support from corporate bodies towards the SONSOL project.
Present at the occasion were the Dean of Quality Assurance and Planning Office, Professor Jerry John Kponyo and some faculty members of the College of Engineering.
