New UK Immigration Rules and Impact on International Students | UK Migration Law 2024

In this post, we go over the recently implemented limitations on international students visiting the UK with relatives. This January, a significant component of Rishi’s plan to reduce legal migration to the UK will take effect, but he still has to contend with opposition from his back benches to reduce both legal and illegal migration before this year’s anticipated general election.

Major Changes in Immigration Policy

Significant modifications to the United Kingdom’s immigration laws have been made by the government; these changes will mostly impact international students beginning in January 2024. These new regulations are in place as a result of Rishi Sunak’s plan to manage lawful immigration. Though these changes are part of a larger plan to curb immigration, they are not without controversy and internal government opposition.

Important Limitations for International Students

The prohibition on international students bringing family members to the UK is the most notable modification. Dependants may only be brought by students engaged in postgraduate research programs or programs receiving funding from the UK government as of January 20, 2024. This action aims to reduce what the UK government considers to be visa system misuse.

The UK government claims that there was a sharp rise in dependant and student visas in 2022, highlighting the need for regulation.

Expected Impact and Opposition

It is projected that this policy will significantly lower the number of immigrants entering the UK; estimates indicate a reduction of about 140,000 per year. According to UK Home Secretary James Cleverly, this is an essential step in managing borders and lowering immigration levels. However, the opposition, which includes AET Cooper, the Shadow Home Secretary for the UK, views these actions as inadequate and as just a band-aid solution to more serious problems.

Broader Immigration Strategy and Challenges

Success rates for the government’s larger plan to lower both legal and illegal immigration have been uneven. The number of illegal migrants has declined, along with a significant decline in Small Boat Crossings; yet, the administration is confronted with internal resistance about the speed and efficacy of its measures. The government’s commitment to meeting its own goals has come under fire as a result of the postponement of a planned hike in the family visa barrier.

The new immigration laws in the UK represent a substantial policy change, mostly affecting international students. There is internal and external criticism of the effectiveness and fairness of these measures, despite the UK government viewing these reforms as essential to managing immigration and tackling system misuse. These events precede a general election, which gives the matter an additional political complexity.

UK Tourist Visa | Work in the UK on a Tourist Visa

We will discuss the UK’s new visa regulations in this update. A tourist visa may allow you to work in the UK. Remember that on January 31, 2024, the UK will implement new visa regulations requiring holders of tourist visas to work remotely and with clients while in the country.

The United Kingdom is set to implement significant modifications to its visa regulations on January 31st, which will facilitate greater commercial opportunities for persons with visitor visas. When visiting the UK, holders of tourist visas are now allowed to work remotely and with clients. The change is anticipated to increase UK business and tourism.

Details of New Visa Rules

Regarding the new sources, the UK government has updated its immigration regulations to permit more activities with visiting visas. Although it is confirmed that the new modifications will take effect on January 31, 2024, the specifics are as follows:

  • Employees of businesses that have both domestic and foreign branches are permitted to work for clients overseas as long as it is demonstrated that a minimal portion of their work is essential to a project or service carried out by the UK branch and is not disclosed to a UK client by the foreign employer.
  • Although guests can work remotely from the UK, this should not be their main reason for visiting.
  • Academics, scientists, and researchers are allowed to carry out research in the UK, except those who seek a 12-month stay visa or wish to extend their license while they are there. Additional activities that lawyers might partake in include giving advice, serving as expert witnesses, taking part in court cases, and attending educational programs.
  • The normal tourist route will incorporate the Permitted Paid Engagement (PPE) visitor pathway, meaning that individuals performing paid engagements won’t require a separate visa; however, they must still schedule the activity within 30 days of their arrival.

With effect from January 2024, business travelers will be able to participate in a greater variety of approved activities and paid engagements, according to Jeremy Hunt, the chancellor of Exeter University. In 2024, the UK government plans to examine additional ways to enhance the regulations about business visitors.
