POSITION: Exams Invigilator

Context of the Role – Team Overview: 

The British Council offers access to English Language and various UK qualifications via its Examinations Services. The British Council Examination Services manages a variety of UK assessments for UK-based examination boards and awarding organizations. These encompass English language proficiency tests like IELTS, Cambridge English, and Aptis, academic assessments including IGCSE, O and A levels from Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) and Edexcel International, along with various professional and university credentials such as ACCA (accounting).

We conduct exams in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, for Ghana. 

In the role of an Invigilator, you will join a larger team of examination venue personnel tasked with assisting in the administration of different assessments across multiple sites. You must collaborate closely with British Council Examination Services personnel, additional venue staff, and venue service providers to guarantee that the test days proceed without issues.

Role Objective – The Position: 

To guarantee that every test conducted by the British Council proceeds without issues on the designated test days and that all responsibilities and standards for those days are fulfilled.

Primary Responsibilities:

You will be responsible for upholding the integrity and reputation of the British Council and various examination boards by ensuring that tests are conducted to established standards for customer service, security, and administration. You will be responsible for enhancing the British Council’s reputation by delivering excellent customer service on the day of the test.

Support for programs/services 

  • Arrive at the testing location at the scheduled time without delay. If there are any delays or you cannot reach the test venue, promptly notify the relevant test day or British Council Examinations Services personnel.
  • Adhere to all applicable standards and protocols, relying on training and reference resources supplied by British Council Examinations Services and the pertinent Exam Boards.
  • Know the emergency protocols for the test day location.
  • Supervise assessments according to the standards set by the British Council Examinations Service and the appropriate Exam Boards.
  • Monitor candidates closely during examinations to ensure that test conditions are not being violated.
  • Assist the supervisor in guaranteeing that candidates enjoy a positive and uniform testing experience, while also perceiving the British Council favourably.
  • Verify that all materials are noted and securely transferred to the supervisor.
  • Maintain precise and comprehensive records of examination assignments. Ensure all reports, logs, and claims are filled out accurately as mandated by British Council Examinations Services.
  • Adhere to all pertinent guidelines and policies in the fields of: Data Protection, Child Safeguarding, Health & Safety, Equal Opportunities and Inclusion, and Anti-Fraud.
  • Notify the relevant test day supervisor about any incidents, emergencies, or security breaches.
  • Collaborate with the test day supervisor to support and guarantee the well-being of candidates at all times. In emergencies, adhere to proper protocols.
  • Extra responsibilities related to the position may be necessary.

Client assistance 

  • Facilitate smooth customer movement by providing candidates with clear guidance and addressing their questions.
  • Make sure candidates adhere to the established exam protocols concerning the location and safety of their possessions.
  • Perform candidate entry, exit, identity verification, and Test Day Photography processes in line with exam standards.
  • Make sure to provide necessary special arrangements.

Training and development: 

  • Participate in all briefing and training sessions as required by the British Council Examinations Services Centre.
  • Finish all required training modules: Data Protection, Child Protection, Health & Safety, Equal Opportunities and Diversity, Anti-Fraud, and Identity Checks as necessary.

Additional key characteristics or necessities of the position: 

  • Certain invigilators might need to travel, which could involve staying overnight. Most will not need to meet this requirement. Throughout the hiring process, you will be required to express your readiness to travel.
  • It is essential to be highly alert while monitoring candidates, to see and listen to what is happening in the examination room.
  • Even if there isn’t a set uniform for your position, you must consistently dress according to the cultural norms of the country you are in and the expectations of your role representing the British Council while fulfilling your responsibilities. It is advisable to wear comfortable, soft footwear.

Role Requirements:

Minimum/necessary 

  • Significant experience in managing the production of products/services delivery.
  • Experience in planning and executing in a high-speed operational setting at a managerial level.
  • Experience leading small teams or showing potential for management.
  • Experience in implementing change and ensuring the integration of new methods of operation.

Desirable: 

  • University diploma in any field or applicable certification
  • Experience in an examination setting
  • Experience in overseeing the implementation of computer-based assessments.
