Marshall Scholarship for US Citizens: Study in the UK
Young Americans with exceptional talent are given financial support through Marshall Scholarships to pursue graduate degrees in the UK. Each year, up to 50 young Americans are chosen to study for a graduate degree in any subject of study in a UK university. The goals of the Marshall Scholarship Program include:
- Making it possible for bright young Americans who will lead their nation in the future to study in the UK.
- Assist students in comprehending and appreciating modern Britain.
- Assist in advancing knowledge in the humanities, social sciences, technology, and creative arts at the best academic institutions in Britain.
- Encourage Scholars to serve as ambassadors for the United States and the United Kingdom throughout their lives, improving relations between the two countries.
- Encourage each Scholar’s academic and personal success.
Scholarship Information
- Host: Any institution in the UK may serve as the host
- Study Level: Master’s degree in any field of study, with the exceptions indicated at this site.
- Scholarships awarded: Each year, up to 50 scholarships are given.
- Eligible Candidates: US citizens
Scholarship value:
The scholarship pays for tuition, living costs, a book grant each year, a thesis award, travel grants for research and daily trips, airfare to and from the United States, and, in some cases, a portion of the support of a dependent spouse.
The Two-Year Marshall Scholarship is valid for two academic years (i.e., 22 months), although the Commission may extend it, but not past the conclusion of a third academic year. The Commission will only extend a student’s third year if there are compelling academic justifications and enough finances are available.
The Marshall Scholarship for One Year is valid for one academic year, or 12 months, and it cannot be renewed.
Eligibility:
Only open to citizens of the United States who have earned a first degree from an American four-year college or university with a minimum GPA of 3.7 at the time they take up their Scholarship. Candidates must have completed their undergraduate studies at a college or institution after April 2021 in order to be eligible for awards tenable beginning in October 2024.
You cannot apply for a Marshall Scholarship if you are already pursuing or have earned a British degree or degree equivalent.
Application Guidelines:
Applications must be submitted in one of eight American areas. Candidates are only permitted to apply in the region in which they have their primary residence, regular place of employment, or are currently enrolled in school. Although the application deadline varies in every regional center, it typically occurs between late September and early October of the year before tenure.
The following dates and times are the deadlines for the 2024 Marshall Competition: September 26, 2023, for applicants and recommenders, at 5:00 p.m. local time; and September 28, 2023, for US Institution endorsement and submission, at 5:00 p.m. local time.

About Marshall Scholarships
Young Americans with exceptional talent are given funding through Marshall Scholarships to pursue their academic dreams in the UK. Each year, up to fifty Scholars are chosen to study at the graduate level in a UK institution in any subject.
The Marshall Scholars contribute to the long-lasting partnership between the British and American peoples, their governments, and their institutions by gaining a deep grasp of British society and developing future leaders. The time spent as a Marshall Scholar helps the academic and personal development of these gifted, independent, and diverse individuals. Their close ties to Britain through its top academic programs are a major factor in their eventual success.
Goals for the Program
- To make it possible for bright American students—the future leaders of their nation—to study in the UK.

- To support the expansion of knowledge in the humanities, social sciences, technology, and creative arts at the best academic institutions in the UK.
- To inspire Scholars to serve as ambassadors for the United States and the United Kingdom throughout their careers, thereby fostering better ties between the two countries.
- To encourage each Scholar’s personal and intellectual fulfillment.
Criteria for Candidate Evaluation
We’re looking for applicants who have the ability to flourish academically, lead others, and advance understanding between the UK and the US. By doing this, we affirm the importance of applicant diversity and advance equal opportunity.
Three equally weighted categories make up the selection criteria:

- Leadership Potential
- Ambassadorial Potential
We hope and anticipate that our Scholars will demonstrate the diversity of talent in the contemporary United States of America.
