Mandela Washington Fellowship 2027 | Call for Applications
Applications are open for the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders. This flagship YALI program has trained nearly 7,800 African leaders since 2014. Fellows join a six-week Leadership Institute at a US college or university. The exact 2027 application deadline isn’t yet published.

What Fellows Receive
The US government fully funds every core Fellowship cost. This includes round-trip travel, housing, meals, and J-1 visa support. Fellows may add an optional six-week Professional Development Experience. Alumni later access seed funding and continued professional development.
Who Can Apply
Applicants must be Sub-Saharan African, non-US citizens or permanent residents. Ages 25 to 35 qualify, with limited exceptions down to 21. Candidates need strong English and eligibility for a J-1 visa. US government employees and their close relatives cannot apply.
Required Materials
Applicants submit a resume, educational background, and personal details online. Recommendation letters and transcripts remain optional supplementary materials. Semi-finalists later provide passport or government ID for verification.
