POSITION: Transmission Engineer

Position Overview

Takes initiative in carrying out network fulfillment tasks. Identifies problems and facilitates solutions when necessary. Serves as a mentor and technical guide for NSD Engineer I.

Duties

  • Diagnosing and resolving network issues at the first and second levels.
  • Address and rectify WDM/DWDM, Packet Switches, and MW network problems within the timeline specified by severity level agreements.
  • Assist with every element of network management, guaranteeing that requests, implementations, and issues are handled as necessary without affecting worldwide communications.
  • Implement and record modifications in line with the issue and change management procedures.
  • Engage in overseeing projects initiated by the engineering team, ensuring complete compliance with implementation and documentation standards. Achieve the project’s goals within specified deadlines.
  • Execute the optimal method to reinstate, retrieve, or modify settings, whether logical or physical, to ensure service integrity on the transport network
  • Make certain that the documentation for Main One’s global and metro fibre network is consistently precise and current.
  • Conduct site assessments, design new apparatus (MW Radio, DWDM, Switches, etc.), set up cabinets, and erect towers.
  • Offer assistance as assigned on final link connections, encompassing the implementation of microwave radio technology.
  • Assist with on-site supervision of OSP builds for all fibre cable tasks, including Fiber Laying, subduct installation and adjustments, fibre testing, and fibre Termination/Splicing.
  • Evaluate test plans and conduct tests to confirm the cable and construction integrity. Provide regular updates on progress/status, derived from information collected from the construction teams.
  • Conduct network analyses employing E-Analyzer, SDH Analyzer, OTDR, and various signal testing tools/instruments to guarantee a faultless network.
  • Provide an assessment of the capacity, stock, and usage of relevant transmission and carrier equipment setups. Supply comprehensive engineering documentation to facilitate and guarantee the success of necessary projects.
  • OSP provides on-site oversight for all fiber cable tasks, including laying fibers, installing subducts and calibrations, testing fiber, and fiber termination/splicing.
  • Ensure quality control on all external plant infrastructure construction by contractors during execution.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree or similar in Electrical/Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering

Necessary Skills

  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in configuring, operating, and maintaining optical fiber and SDH transmission systems.
  • Familiarity with microwave transmission is necessary, along with basic training in optical networks and SDH/OTN/WDM/DWDM/IP networks.
  • A fundamental grasp of IP quality of service and network management principles is essential.
  • SDH OTN expertise and/or background in a telecommunications setting · Skill in understanding topography, network design diagrams, and CAD layouts
  • Proficiency in utilizing E-Analyser, OSA, OTDR, Transmission Analysers, optical power meters, and various signal testing equipment/instruments.
  • Fundamental understanding of setting up and resolving L1 and L2 problems for Cisco and Ciena devices.
  • Solid comprehension of OSPF, TCP/IP, enterprise Wireless, and Layer 2 technologies.
  • Experience in TCP/IP, Network Security, VoIP, and OSPF networking is necessary.
  • In-depth understanding of Spanning Tree, VLANs, VTP, and Trunking protocols.
  • Strong understanding of the Microsoft Office suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and MS SharePoint.
  • Capable of collaborating effectively in a fast-paced team and managing multiple challenges. Able to handle multiple tasks, manage time effectively, and prioritize responsibilities.
  • Capacity to guide managed vendors in prioritizing and addressing issues while recognizing future requirements.
  • The capability to stay calm and prioritize customer service in challenging and unclear circumstances.

Requirements of the Position

  • Capacity and readiness to work extended hours and adhere to strict deadlines
  • It may be necessary to travel away from the station.
  • Weekends may need to be worked
