Job Concepts
The purpose of the work is to do physical work to get a variety of unskilled jobs done or to check levees for signs of slides and washouts to make sure they drain properly and get rid of other causes of damage.
- Work Level: Beginning.
- Supervision Received: Close supervision from a Laborer Foreman or another worker with a higher rank.
- Work Location: All agencies can use it.
- Job Distinctions: Different from other unskilled jobs in that most of the tasks must be done under close supervision.
Work Examples
- Cuts grass, weeds, trees, and brush; cleans culverts, drains, and ditches; moves, loads, and unloads materials, supplies, and equipment; removes obstacles from highway or property; hauls or carries sand, lumber, asphalt, and cement; apply patching materials to highway surfaces; pours dirt, sand, and water into a mud jack and fills it.
- Mows the grass with a tractor and cleans farm equipment.
- Does a lot of different kinds of physical work.
- Animals are given water, and their living areas are washed and cleaned.
- When a road is being worked on, they direct traffic, wash equipment, and help with repairs.
- Assists skilled workers by carrying materials and tools or doing unskilled tasks like mixing concrete or digging holes. Moves furniture, oxygen tanks, or other heavy equipment in an institution or public building. Moves ice to a place where it can be stored.
- Digs post holes and ditches take care of seed beds and seedlings and fight wood fires with back pumps and rakes. Mows lawns, trims bushes, rakes grass, and trash, and does other simple tasks related to a nursery, greenhouse, forest, farm, or groundwork.
- Chips, scrapes, scales, clean ironwork, and help set up or move scaffolding.
AS A LEVEE INSPECTOR
- Drives a vehicle over an assigned area and checks levees for weak spots and other dangerous conditions. Makes reports of the conditions.
- Levees are watched so that animals and cars don’t go on them.
- As needed, supervises work crews doing emergency repairs and maintenance on levees.
- Checks that the rules of the Department of Public Works and the Levee Board are followed when building fences, putting in pipes, gas lines, and water lines.
- During high water levels, stays on duty and looks for slides, sand boils, and washes.
- Makes plans for draining and sacking to keep levees in good shape and stop water from going over them.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
You don’t need any experience or training.
