Involuntary Loss of EU citizenship
The 1991 Treaty on European Union established EU citizenship to promote European values and identity. EU members have the right to vote in and compete in European Parliament elections, move freely, and get diplomatic protection under the Treaty.
Some of these rights are only available when you move between Member States. Only citizens of EU Member States can become EU citizens. Member States can determine citizenship eligibility based on their respective aspirations and identities.
Today, we’ll discuss EU citizens losing their citizenship without their consent. You may not realize you’re identityless. Accidentally losing citizenship, especially if you live overseas, is the worst. If they don’t keep their citizenship or the country takes it away, this can happen.
- Citizenship can be taken away for things like crime or not being loyal. (in 15 EU member states)
- If they serve in a foreign army (in 12 EU countries), they lose their citizenship.
- In 10 EU countries, you can lose your identity if you live abroad for a long time.
- In 9 EU member states, it is possible to lose citizenship if you have more than one citizenship or if you get another citizenship.
Many people forget or aren’t really aware that they are losing their citizenship if they live abroad for a long time. This is true for two different kinds of people.
- Cyprus, Ireland, and Malta are the only ones with naturalized citizens.
- Only Belgium, Denmark, Spain, and Sweden have people born outside of the country.
