Gilman-FLAD Portugal International Students Scholarship: Study In Portugal

Gilman-FLAD Undergraduate and graduate-level studies at Portuguese universities are available through the Portugal Scholarship for International Students, Study in Portugal initiative.

Description of the scholarship:

The Gilman-FLAD Scholarship enables the Gilman Program to support exceptional students who wish to study or intern in Portugal. This life-changing opportunity is made possible by the Gilman Program.

In 2020, this partnership was made by the Gilman Scholarship Program and the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD). It gives underrepresented U.S. students a chance to study abroad in Portugal through SiPN, a program that promotes cooperation between the U.S. and Portugal while highlighting Portugal’s appeal as a learning destination.

Students can also study Portuguese, a language that is extremely important, thanks to this effort.

Funding

The U.S. government funds the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, sometimes known as the Gilman Scholarship, which offers financial aid to American undergraduate students who want to study or intern overseas. The Institute of International Education (IIE) is in charge of running the program. It is run by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State.

The award, which is named after Benjamin A. Gilman, a former U.S. representative from New York, intends to broaden the demographics of students engaging in global education opportunities and to inspire them to select non-traditional study abroad locations.

It is specially designed for students from various backgrounds, such as those who have financial difficulties, those who have disabilities, and those who are learning important languages.

The Gilman Scholarship provides money to aid in paying for tuition, board & room, books, local transportation, insurance, and overseas travel. The maximum award for a typical study abroad program is $5,000. An extra Critical Need Language Award of up to $8,000 is offered for students studying critical need languages.

The initiative encourages cultural interchange and understanding in addition to offering financial help. It encourages scholarship recipients to get involved in their host nations’ local communities and talk about their experiences when they come back to the United States.

About Study in Portugal Network (SiPN)

Portugal is “The Gateway for US Higher Education to Study Abroad”
A specialized provider of international education, Study in Portugal Network (SiPN) is situated in Lisbon, Portugal. Through a range of study abroad opportunities, we as a multi-university partnership of Portuguese universities hope to draw American students and faculty to Portugal.

SiPN provides chances for summer, full-year, and semester study abroad. We also warmly accept a few of short-term faculty-led programs each year that are specifically designed to meet the needs and specifications of the program’s director and the program’s respective U.S. home university.

Due to SiPN’s special connections to Portuguese universities, as well as to governmental and corporate organizations, we may discuss almost any subject that is intended to be studied in Portugal.

Additionally, SiPN programs provide students the choice to enroll in Portuguese, English, or a combination of the two courses at any of the consortium’s Lisbon-based universities. Students may choose to attend the University of the Azores’ Ponta Delgada campus during our summer program.

We enroll students in the same courses that are available to all students at the host university to give them a completely immersive educational experience.

What Does SiPN Offer?

SiPN offers the most affordable study abroad programs in Portugal compared to the others. SiPN is able to offer all-inclusive fees that cover tuition, lodging, cultural activities, city and country tours, public transportation passes, travel and health insurance, and ongoing support from SiPN team members at the lowest prices on the market thanks to its affiliation with The Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD), one of Portugal’s most illustrious foundations. The goal is to simply help students live, learn, and experience all that Portugal has to offer while abroad.

Only with the help of the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD), a private Portuguese non-profit grant-making foundation, is SiPN’s enormous value made possible. FLAD funds programs that encourage scientific and cultural contact between Portugal and the United States.

FLAD actively supports the goal of promoting global understanding through the exchange of academics and students for academic purposes. In order to strengthen ties between the Portuguese and American academic communities and entice more American students to study abroad in Portugal, SiPN was founded in 2014.

SiPN Membership

As a proud founder, SiPN/FLAD is a part of:

  • The city of Lisbon launched the “Study in Lisbon” campaign to encourage student migration to the area.
  • “Made of Lisboa” refers to the entrepreneurial group of creatives based in Lisbon.
  • The “Study and Research in Portugal” Pavilion is at the annual NAFSA conference, which is held every year in a different US city.
