Fully funded Mo Ibrahim Foundation Scholarship 2023-2024

The Mo Ibrahim Foundation Scholarship for MSc in Development Policy & Politics 2023–2024 is now accepting applications. The scholarship is funded by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation and is for a two-year program. The chosen applicant will complete a one-year MSc program in its entirety as well as a one-year integrated internship.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to spend six months at the University of Birmingham’s International Development Department conducting research with academics and the GSDRC, followed by six months at the Mo Ibrahim Foundation in London, where they will work with the team on a variety of initiatives designed to “put governance at the center of Africa’s development.”

This includes taking part in the Ibrahim Governance Weekend and the Now Generation Forum, two new forums for young professionals and emerging African leaders.

Program Information

There is now a growing understanding that development – whether at the national, subnational, regional, or global levels – is essentially political. Development policymakers, practitioners, and scholars have all adopted the motto that “politics matters.”

Strong political analytical skills and a thorough awareness of the political foundations of the obstacles to global development are needed to address the issues we confront and seize the opportunities before us.

The instruction incorporates lessons about politics, power, government, and policy from all over the world, and they gain from the really international student body at IDD who adds to conversations by contributing their own experiences and knowledge.

This MSc establishes a clear connection between theoretical and realistic policy approaches to development that are grounded in research and theory.

Students are exposed to innovations and rigor, complexity and discussion, bridging theory and practice, thanks to IDD’s cutting-edge research on governance, leadership, democracy, thinking and acting politically, and much more.

The following required modules are part of the Foundation scholarship pathway:

  • Worldwide Development (20 credits)
  • Political Development and Policy (20 credits)
  • Dissertation (60 credits) (60 credits). a thorough examination of a subject of great interest, supported by a supervisor. This can entail conducting fieldwork abroad in a nation that the candidate has selected.

Choose one of the modules below:

  • Governing and creating new states (20 credits)
  • Development, Dictatorship, and Democracy (20 credits)
  • Alternative modules (60 credits)

Any module offered by the School of Government may be selected. With the Program Director’s approval, you may select a module from another university or college.

Scholarship

The scholarship comes with:

  • The whole price of tuition
  • Airfare to and from the UK, as well as visa fees
  • A stipend of £950 per month for 18 months
  • A £950 arrival allowance
  • The Mo Ibrahim Foundation will pay the selected candidate directly for the remaining six months of the internship.

Eligibility

The prerequisites for entry include:

  • An accredited university degree with first-class honors, or its equivalent, is required.
  • Candidates must be younger than 30 at the time of application.
  • Excellent spoken and written English. Evidence of this ability is essential for persons for whom English is not their first language. IELTS proficiency of at least 6.5 or a TOEFL score of 580/93 is required for applicants.

  • The applicants must be citizens of Africa who reside (or have a permanent address in) an African nation.
  • Candidates for scholarships who reside in Sub-Saharan Africa will be given preference.

Application

By March 31, 2023, applications must be submitted online through the university’s application system. You must upload a 500-word statement and your resume in addition to the standard submission materials. This paragraph should explain why you are the most qualified applicant for the scholarship.
