Four hundred years of fame

The University of Groningen has established itself as a leading educational institution in the Netherlands, and it is the second oldest university in the country. During its long and illustrious history of 400 years, the institution has been attended by a great number of brilliant individuals. Among them are Nobel Prize winners such as Ben Feringa (Chemistry, 2016) and Frits Zernike (Physics, 1953).

Some of them have been pioneers in their respective industries, such as the first Dutch astronaut and the first president of the European Bank. Others have been the first female university student in the Netherlands and the first female instructor in the country.

City Full of Life

Groningen has a history that dates back to 300 BC, but today it is a bustling student city that has the youngest population of any city in the Netherlands; in fact, one in every four individuals who live here are students. Because of this, there is always something to do, since there are several art and music festivals, theaters, movies, and performance places that cater to all preferences, regardless of whether you prefer to watch or want to participate in the activity.

The Groninger Museum, with its internationally acclaimed collection of modern art, as well as the Stadsschouwburg, which dates back 133 years and is considered to be one of the most beautiful and historic city theaters in the Netherlands, are also essential stops.

Dutch Daily Life

The quality of life in Groningen is unrivaled, with achingly beautiful architecture, cozy day markets, lovely shopping districts, and hotspots abounding. Purchase your fresh meat, cheese, and fruit in the “Vismarkt” market in the heart of the city, or enjoy lunch with friends at the Kijk in ‘t Jatstraat just close to our Harmony Building. Shop ’til you drop in Groningen’s plethora of pubs, or meet up with pals on the Zwanestraat, recently named the greatest shopping street in the Netherlands.

Global Community

Foreign students have long been welcomed in Groningen. Even in the 17th century, about half of the students and professors were from countries other than the Netherlands. With more than 6,000 international students from more than 120 countries, the university continues to draw a sizable international community. The best part is that you can live in Groningen without knowing Dutch.

180 of our degrees are taught in English, so you can get by without learning the language. Our Erasmus Student Network (ESN) organizes over 150 events a year, including an introductory week and cycling lessons, for international students in Groningen.
