A Word on AIMS

A Pan-African network of centers of excellence for post-graduate instruction, research, and public engagement in mathematical sciences, the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) was established in 2003. The AIMS network is comprised of five centers of excellence that are dedicated to the instruction of a Master of Science in Mathematical Sciences. Three of these institutions offer a work-integrated option that features a direct link to local industry.

At this time, the network is made up of approximately 2,400 graduates from 44 different African countries, of which women make up 33% of the total. In addition, the network is comprised of research facilities and programs, with a total of ninety researchers, as well as six prominent Chairs currently spread throughout the network. AIMS is now implementing a gender-responsive teacher training program in both Cameroon and Rwanda.

In addition, the African Institute for Mathematical and Statistical Studies (AIMS) established two essential programs: the Next Einstein Forum and the Quantum Leap Africa. Both of these programs are designed to catapult Africa into the global scientific arena.

Why Do We Need AIMS?

A pan-African network of Centers of Excellence for post-graduate instruction in mathematical sciences, research, and public engagement in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) was recently established. AIMS is providing the means for Africa’s brightest students to realize their potential as innovators and contribute to the continent’s advancement in the fields of science, education, and the economy.

Regarding AMMI

We were able to successfully launch the African Masters of Machine Intelligence (AMMI) program at AIMS in September 2018, owing to the kind support of the global AI community as well as the sponsorship of Facebook and Google. AMMI’s mission is to improve the quality of artificial intelligence (AI) education available in Africa and to contribute to the development of a thriving ecosystem of AI practitioners who are dedicated to having a beneficial effect on our societies.

It has been quite thrilling to watch them over the course of the past few years as they have grown their technical ability as well as developed strong relationships via the use of group projects and contacts with world-class lecturers. They now serve as mentors to students at the institutions where they were formerly employed, and they also receive mentoring from more senior academics in the subject. After successfully completing the AMMI program, they will take on the role of mentors for the students in the class that comes after theirs.

AMMI is an innovative and fully financed intense graduate program that lasts for one year and provides exceptionally bright young Africans with training in the most recent developments in machine learning and the applications of this field.

Researchers in machine intelligence who are prepared to respond to both the current and future demands of Africa and the world are developed through participation in the AMMI initiative.
