There is a fellowship opportunity available called the Fully Funded Hong Kong Ph.D. Fellowship Scheme 2024–25 for those who want to pursue doctoral-level studies at Chinese universities.

Description of the scholarship:

The Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong launched the Hong Kong Ph.D. Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) in 2009 with the goal of luring the best and brightest students in the world to pursue their Ph.D. studies in Hong Kong’s universities.

Benefits of the scholarship

For a period of up to three years, the Fellowship offers each awardee an annual salary of HK$331,200 (about US$42,460) and a travel allowance for conferences and research-related travel of HK$13,800 (around US$1,760) annually. In the academic year 2024–2025, 300 Ph.D. Fellowships will be given out*.

* The academic year at universities in Hong Kong typically begins in September.

Nationalities that qualify:

This fellowship is available to students of any nationality who are currently enrolled in an educational institution located outside of their home country.

Eligibility Requirements

No matter their country of origin, prior work experience, or racial background, candidates seeking admission as new full-time Ph.D. students at the eight universities listed below should be entitled to apply.

Candidates must exhibit exceptional attributes in their academic performance, research potential, interpersonal and communication skills, and leadership potential.

Application Process:

In order to be considered for a Hong Kong Ph.D. Fellowship Scheme Reference Number, candidates who meet the criteria must first meet the requirement of submitting an initial application online through the Hong Kong Ph.D. Fellowship Scheme Electronic System (HKPFSES) by the 1st of December 2023 at 12:00:00 Hong Kong Time. After that, these applicants are able to move through with the application process for doctoral programs at the universities of their choosing.

Applicants for the Hong Kong Postgraduate Fellowship 2024/25 are permitted to choose up to two programs or departments at any one or more universities for their Ph.D. studies. Students need to ensure that they meet all of the prerequisites for entry into the institutions and programs that they have selected.

Candidates should submit their first applications as early as possible to ensure they have sufficient time to submit applications to universities, as the deadlines for some universities may immediately follow that of the first Application.
