Canada TFW Program Latest Update 2024 | HUGE in LMIA

As the world economy continues to change, Canada is about to implement a major change in its immigration policy for the first time. The country is about to set goals for temporary residents, which is a significant turning point in how it will control immigration. This project, which will go into effect in the fall, demonstrates Canada’s dedication to flexibility and responsiveness in negotiating the intricacies of modern migratory dynamics.

When it sets immigration levels in the fall, Canada will for the first time impose a soft ceiling on the number of new temporary resident arrivals, Immigration Minister Mark Miller stated last Thursday. The declaration is the most recent in a slew of actions Miller has made in the past few months to control the unchecked population rise. Over the next three years, the federal government intends to reduce the percentage of temporary residents from the present 60% to 5% of the population.

Miller has previously stated that Canada has become dependent on temporary labor, citing a notable rise in the number of temporary residents entering the nation each year. Miller stated at a press conference that adjustments are required to make the system more sustainable and effective.

As we plan, we should have an open discussion about the implications of increased international migration for Canada. Canada’s immigration laws, especially those about temporary resident streams, are under close examination as a result of the country’s rapid population expansion.

Canada Population Growth

In the third quarter of 2023, Canada’s population increased by almost 430,000, which was the greatest rate of growth in any quarter since 1957. The non-permanent inhabitants were the main driver of about three-quarters of that expansion. Higher enrollment of overseas students in post-secondary institutions and greater usage of temporary worker programs caused a jump in the number of temporary residents in Canada.

To aid businesses in filling vacancies during the pandemic, the federal government relaxed regulations about temporary foreign workers. In addition to hiring record numbers, Canada has welcomed a sizable influx of refugees in response to humanitarian crises, notably about 300,000 Ukrainians escaping the Russian invasion.

Housing Pressures and Problems in the Student Visa System

Due to housing shortages and issues with the student visa process, some dishonest people have been able to charge exorbitant tuition to overseas students while offering subpar instruction. Miller announced that he will call a conference of provincial, territorial, and federal ministers in May to discuss setting the appropriate levels.

Provinces and territories must take accountability for the individuals they bring in as well as recognize their labor requirements and capacities. To better match current programs that hire temporary workers with labor needs and weed out exploitation in the system, Miller has also requested his Department to study these programs.

Additionally, the government is taking steps to lower the amount of workers entering specific industries in Canada. Employment Minister Randy said that as of May 1, companies that are currently permitted to have up to thirty percent of their workforce originate from the Temporary Foreign Worker Program would only be able to use twenty percent of that workforce.

Additionally, before hiring temporary foreign workers, firms must first evaluate Asylum Seekers with legitimate work permits for available positions, according to Randy.

Migrant Workers Alliance For Change

To divert attention from corporate and governmental inadequacies in guaranteeing a respectable standard of living, a spokesman of the Migrant Forkers Alliance For Change claimed that temporary migrants had been singled out for blame in the housing and affordability crises. In a statement, the federal government said, “We call on them to stop responding to racism by playing with numbers and caps and instead to build a fair society with equal rights for all the group.”

The organization also restated the long-standing demand that refugees, international students, migrant workers, and undocumented residents be granted permanent status. The announcement signifies a change in the federal government’s position regarding programs for temporary foreign workers.

The spokesman stated that the purpose of this news conference was to inform the public that we are slightly shifting our position on this. We are moving distinctly. These days, the focus is on scaling down this program rather than expanding it.

Immigration policy experts have long advocated for changes to the Temporary Foreign Worker Programs. He stated that increasing the cost a business must pay to submit for a Labor Market Impact Assessment is one way the Federal Government can bring things back under control.

Employers are currently required to pay $1,000 to the federal government for each post requested. He argued that raising the price is necessary to lower the demand for these temporary foreign workers.

Final Thoughts

Due to a shortage of housing and other amenities, Miller declared last fall that he would level out the number of new permanent residents in Canada in 2026. Canada has announced that it intends to set targets for temporary residents, which is a proactive move toward improving its immigration policy.

This calculated action not only demonstrates the country’s resolve to successfully manage migration but also shows that it is prepared to take advantage of new opportunities and challenges in the field of temporary residency. As Canada gets ready to enact this historic policy change, it establishes a standard for other countries facing comparable challenges in the constantly changing global mobility scenario.
