Canada Launches New Tech Talent Strategy To Attract Tech Talents Worldwide.

A Tech Talent Strategy has been put in place by the Canadian government, led by Minister Fraser. This strategy is meant to bring in and keep top tech workers from all over the world to help Canada’s tech industry grow.

The goals of the Strategy are: It aims to make Canada a leader in technology and innovation around the world, boost economic growth, create jobs, and make Canada more competitive in the tech sector. Find out more…

Canada’s New Tech Talent Strategy Measures

With the following steps, Canada’s new Tech Talent Strategy aims to bring in more tech workers:

  • Creating a new open work permit for people with an H-1B visa: Foreign workers in the United States who have H-1B visas for specialty occupations will now be able to apply for a work permit in Canada. This permit will also let their family members study or work in Canada if they come with them. The program will start on July 16 and go on for a year or until 10,000 people have applied, whichever comes first.
  • Establishment of the Innovation Stream within the International Mobility Program: Canada will start issuing work permits for up to five years that are specific to an employer in order to meet the needs of companies approved by the government. Also, people with high skills who work in certain high-demand jobs will be able to get open work permits that last up to five years. The innovation stream should be up and running by the end of this year.
  • Restoring the Global Skills Strategy’s 14-day service requirement for work permits: Employment and Social Development Canada will stick to a two-week processing standard for Global Talent Stream labor market impact assessments. This is to make it easier to get skilled workers from all over the world quickly. In the same way, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will stick to the standard of processing work permit applications in two weeks. These changes are meant to make up for the time lost because of the pandemic.
  • Welcome to digital nomads: Canada is letting people who work from home come to the country to work for up to six months. The process will be the same as for a tourist, so digital nomads will be able to see Canada while working remotely.
  • Express Entry STEM-specific draws: The Express Entry system will use category-based selections to send more invitations to candidates with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) backgrounds to apply for immigration. The goal of this plan is to bring skilled people in these fields to Canada.
  • Improving the Start-up Visa Program: Different changes will be made to the Start-up Visa Program. In 2023, the number of available spots will go up, and more expansions are planned for 2024 and 2025. People will be able to apply for a work permit that is good for up to three years instead of just one year. Applicants will also be able to apply for an open work permit, which lets them work for any employer instead of just their own start-up. Also, Canada will give the three-year open work permit to all members of the entrepreneur’s team, not just those who are important and needed right away. Applications that are supported by venture capital, angel investor groups, and business incubators, as well as those that are supported by Canada’s Tech Network member incubators, will be given priority.
