Belgium Government ARES Scholarship – fully funded
International students can now apply for the Fully Funded Belgium Government ARES Scholarship for 2024–2025. Students who want to enroll in bachelor’s or master’s degree programs at Belgian universities can apply for the scholarships.
Description of the Scholarship
Are you a national of one of the nations that make up ARES? Do you have a degree from an advanced school? Do you have professional experience and would want to further your knowledge in a development-related field?
With the help of the ARES scholarships, you can enroll in a higher education institution in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation of Belgium and pursue an advanced bachelor’s or master’s degree program that lasts one year, or you can take a shorter continuing education course that lasts two to six months.

Travel Expenses Abroad
- Documentation of expenses is necessary.
- One round-trip ticket per academic year in economy class on an airline certified by the IATA.
Assistance with Living Expenses:
- A set sum is given in one lump payment.
- Includes coverage for a 12-month period (plus a reduced 13th month).
Extra Fees Associated with Applying for Visas:
- Reimbursement will be determined by reporting actual expenses when the cost surpasses 200 euros.
Fees for registration:
- Reimbursement of fees will occur at the current DGD scholar rate.
Insurance Premiums:
- ARES pays for these expenses directly.
Nationalities That Qualify:
Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Haiti, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, Morocco, Mozambique, Nepal, Niger, Peru, Philippines, Republic of Guinea, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe are among the countries from which recipients of this scholarship may apply.Â
Qualification Standards:
In order to be eligible for the Belgium Government ARES Scholarship, candidates need to fulfill the necessary requirements:
- Be under 40 years old for degree programs and under 45 years old for training courses at the start of the program.
- Be a citizen of one of the aforementioned nations.
- The course runs for a full academic year.
- Have a background in academia related to the topic of study that you have selected.
- Reading and writing in English proficiency is required.
Relevant Records:
- A pair of recommendation letters, either professional or academic
- Verified duplicates of the original diplomas.
- Verified transcript copies for each academic year.
- Proof of employment history throughout the previous five years.
- Verification of nationality using a copy of a passport or a nationality certificate.
- Pre-project document (mandated in the course-specific entrance requirements, if applicable).

APPLYING FOR A GRANT: HOW DO I DO IT?

When submitting your proposal to ARES, you should do so through the GIRAF platform:

First things first, make sure your GIRAF account is current.
- Click this link to register for an account on the GIRAF platform. Don’t create more than one account; ARES will authenticate this one in a few hours to a few days. You will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to create a password.
- You can use an account you created last year that has been validated, and you can reset your password if needed.
- After logging into your GIRAF account, go to your GIRAF profile and select the Competitive Call option to access the application form. Please be aware that the “International training application 2024-2025” button can only be clicked once. Your form can subsequently be found in the Competitive Calls’ My Tasks section.
- If you select the “Save and edit later” option, you are allowed to fill out your form more than once. Every time, you will discover your form in GIRAF’s Competitive calls tab’s My Tasks table.
- You can no longer edit your application after you click “Submit my application” because it gets forwarded to ARES. It is still available for review in the table under My submitted files.
END DATE FOR APPLICATIONS TO BE SUBMITTED
Applications must be sent via GIRAF by November 17, 2023, at the latest, at 12 p.m. (Belgian time, UTC+1). After this deadline, applications won’t be taken into consideration.
At the conclusion of the selection process (June 2024), an email will be sent to each successful and reserved candidate. Candidates who are not selected will, at the latest, receive an email by the end of June 2024. Applicants will not receive any correspondence beyond the information provided above.
