Australia Visa 189 Vs 190 | 3 Major Differences | Australia Visa Updates 2023

The purpose of the skilled independent subclass 189 and the skilled nominated subclass 190 visas, which are both permanent residence visas, is to attract experienced and skilled immigrants whose work is listed as skilled occupations. Candidates for the 189 and 190 visas are ranked using a points-based system.

They are similar in that regard based on their age, level of English language ability, work history, and qualifications. Employer sponsorship is not required for either, and your score will determine how well you compete against other applicants. The three primary distinctions between the 189 and 190 visas will be discussed in this post to assist you in selecting the appropriate one.

Although the 189 and 190 visas differ greatly in other areas, they are comparable in many other areas as well. These consist of;

State or Territory Sponsorship

Because it needs sponsorship by an Australian state or territory, the 190 Visa type is different from the 189 Visa type. The 190 Visa is the only one with an additional requirement. You need to be sponsored by an Australian state or territory to be eligible for the visa. You are free to live and work anywhere in Australia for as long as you choose without the backing of any state or territory because the 189 Visa has no sponsorship restrictions.

Individuals must first determine the standards set forth by the particular state or territory you plan to apply to for sponsorship, as the 190 Visa requires sponsorship from a state or territory. This need will vary depending on several factors, such as your specified occupation, your location within Australia, and the state or territory in question.

Knowing the requirements ahead of time is essential because each state and territory may have different requirements for certain jobs and residency.

Occupation Lists

A further distinction between the 189 and 190 visas is the availability of listings of skilled occupations. The only prerequisite for obtaining an 189 visa is having your occupation included on the medium- and long-term strategic skills list (MLTSSL). State or territorial nomination is not necessary. You must, however, make sure that your field of employment is included in the list of occupations in that state or territory because the invitation to a 190 Visa is contingent upon state or territory sponsorship.

This is because different states and territories have different lists of jobs for their nominees. Depending on whether the applicant is applying onshore or offshore, different jobs from the short-term skilled occupation list (STSOL) or the MLTSSL should be used.

There is an extra postgraduate stream for holders of master’s and doctoral degrees. States and territories have different criteria for this stream. Most crucially, several States and territories have additional requirements for specific employment, such as a higher minimum score or a minimum requirement for a certain length of work experience following qualification.

Currently, you have to nominate a profession that is on the Department’s priority migration skills list or that is part of an industry that is important enough to the state and territory to meet the standards. These guidelines are subject to routine evaluation and revision.

Invitation Rounds

The process and frequency of the invitation rounds for the 189 and 190 visas vary. Every month invites for the 189 Visa are usually sent by the federal government to all jobs on the MLTSSL. The rounds for invitations to states and territories are distinct from these. For the 189 Visa invitation rounds, there is a cap on the total number of EOIs that can be selected for a certain occupation.

A balanced distribution of invites across occupations is ensured by the employment figures released by the Australian Bureau of Figures. No more invites will be issued for a profession after its allotted number has been reached. This enables the states and territories to encourage a more widely distributed intake of skilled migrants and assist their development ambitions through the migration program.
