Role Overview

As Chief Internal Auditor, you will architect and implement the bank’s internal audit strategy while providing objective assurance on control effectiveness. You will serve as a trusted advisor to the Board and executive management on risk mitigation and compliance matters. This position requires both strategic vision and practical oversight in a dynamic financial services environment.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Audit Leadership

Develop and monitor internal audit objectives aligned with organizational strategy
Lead change initiatives in risk assessment, audit planning, and execution methodologies
Maintain audit technology platforms in collaboration with IT departments
Ensure compliance with International Professional Practices Framework standards

Risk Management & Compliance

Identify and assess operational risks across banking activities
Implement risk mitigation strategies and control enhancements
Ensure audit activities comply with regulatory requirements and ethical standards
Coordinate with external auditors to optimize assurance coverage

Audit Execution & Reporting

Execute comprehensive risk-based audit programs across key operational areas
Prepare detailed reports for the Board and management with actionable recommendations
Conduct financial, operational, and compliance audits to evaluate control effectiveness
Analyze financial statements and transactional data for irregularities

Stakeholder Engagement & Governance

Communicate audit results to Board committees and senior management
Build collaborative relationships with business units and assurance providers
Promote an organizational culture of integrity and accountability
Provide regular updates on emerging risks and control best practices

Team Leadership & Development

Direct internal audit team performance through objective setting and monitoring
Facilitate continuous professional development through targeted training
Manage performance issues and reinforce organizational values
Coordinate with Risk and Compliance functions to optimize assurance value

Qualifications and Experience

Master’s degree in Fraud/Risk Management, Accounting, or related discipline
Professional certification (CIA, CPA, CA, or ACCA) from recognized institution
Minimum 10 years in financial services internal audit with 8 years in management
Experience in developing economy financial institution
CISA certification or equivalent information systems audit qualification
Additional banking or development finance credentials
Background in international professional standards implementation
