2024 University Of Tokyo MEXT Scholarship – Study In Japan
Students from outside of Japan are eligible to apply for the University of Tokyo MEXT Scholarship 2024–25, which will provide complete funding for the student’s master’s or doctoral degree studies at the university.
Description of the scholarship:
The Japanese government offers international students who wish to attend the University of Tokyo the University of Tokyo MEXT Scholarship, a fully-funded scholarship. The scholarship includes a monthly stipend in addition to tuition, flights, and living costs. Candidates must be under 35 and hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Additionally, they must be fluent in Japanese.

Benefits of the scholarship
Allowance:
The stipends for each month for AY2024 are still being confirmed, but for AY2023, they were 144,000 yen for master’s degrees and 145,000 yen for doctoral degrees. It is possible to add an extra 2,000 or 3,000 yen a month for study in particular areas. During prolonged absences from the university, the scholarship won’t be awarded.
Travel:
If departing within the final month of the scholarship period, recipients will also receive roundtrip airfare from the closest international airport to their place of residency in Japan. The beneficiary is accountable for all expenses excluding air travel.
School Fees
There are no enrollment or tuition costs.
Suspension of a scholarship:
If the beneficiary gives false information, breaks pledges, violates the law, is subject to disciplinary action by the host university, has low academic standing, changes their visa status, accepts additional scholarships, advances without permission, transfers, or leaves the institution, the scholarship may be revoked.
Nationalities that qualify:
Anyone with one of the nationalities listed by MEXT may submit an application for this scholarship.
The rules regarding nationality for this year have not yet been released (the notification is anticipated to reach us after the application time has ended), but in the previous round, only persons with the Priority Nationalities listed below by MEXT were qualified to be nominated.

Additionally, candidates must be citizens of a nation with which Japan has diplomatic ties. Candidates who at the time of application were citizens of Japan are ineligible.
Japanese citizens who are living abroad at the time of application, who are dual citizens of another nation, and who intend to renounce their Japanese citizenship before arrival (corresponding to the period when they enroll as students at a Japanese university), nevertheless, are eligible to apply.
Eligibility Requirements
Students from abroad with exceptional academic records who intend to enroll in the Master’s or Doctoral Program at the Graduate School of Science in Japan in October 2024 as new students.
Both current students and applicants who have already completed their most recent degree program should have a grade point average of 2.30 or higher for their most recent courses, and both should be expected to uphold the same academic standards throughout the scholarship program. Grade points must be determined using a system provided by MEXT.
Age
- Applicants must have been born on or after April 2, 1989.
Academic Credentials
- To be accepted as a Master’s or Doctoral Program student at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Science, applicants must meet the required requirements.
Subject of Study
The field of study that applicants studied at their prior university, or one that is relevant, should be applied for. Candidates should choose a subject they can study at their preferred host university in Japan.
Linguistic ability
Candidates must fulfill one of the following language criteria in either English or Japanese:
English
- Possesses a B2 or higher on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) scale for English proficiency (for example, a TOEFL iBT score of 72 or higher or an IELTS score of 5.5 or higher).

Possesses a degree from a school where the English language is the main medium of instruction and who has met the entrance requirements for either the Master’s or Doctoral Programs at the Graduate School of Science, University of Tokyo.
Japanese
Has achieved an N2 or higher on the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT).
Meets the entrance requirements for the Master’s Program or Doctoral Program at the Graduate School of Science, University of Tokyo, and has successfully completed an educational program using Japanese as the primary language of instruction.
Health
Candidates must be in good enough physical and mental health to pursue their education in Japan.
Entry into Japan
The acceptance university will specify a date for applicants to arrive in Japan, which in general must fall two weeks before or after the start of the semester (October 1) in the year they have chosen.
Applicants must withdraw their applications if they are unable to enter Japan by the deadline unless there are unavoidable circumstances as determined by MEXT. Additionally, candidates will not be reimbursed for travel expenses if they leave the above-mentioned time frame for personal reasons.
Visa Prerequisites
In general, applicants should get a visa before their trip to Japan and enter the country with the resident status “Student”. The applicant’s home country’s Japanese embassy or consulate must issue the visa. The applicant should be advised that if they arrive in Japan without a recently obtained “Student” visa, the scholarship would be revoked.
It should be noted that applicants who change their status from “Student” to another type of residence after arriving in Japan will no longer be eligible to receive the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship as of the time they seek to do so.
