About United Nations

The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945. Currently made up of 193 Member States, the UN, and its work are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter.

The UN has evolved over the years to keep pace with a rapidly changing world.

But one thing has stayed the same: it remains the one place on Earth where all the world’s nations can gather together, discuss common problems, and find shared solutions that benefit all of humanity.

Member States

From the original 51 Member States in 1945 to the present 193 Member States, the UN has increased its membership.

The General Assembly is comprised of every member state of the UN. Upon the Security Council’s proposal, the General Assembly may decide to admit a state to membership.

Main Bodies

The Economic and Social Council coordinates, evaluates, dialogues, and recommends economic, social, and environmental policies and implements global development goals.

Security Council

According to the UN Charter, the Security Council is in charge of maintaining global peace and security. There are 10 non-permanent and 5 permanent members in total.

There is one vote per Member. All Member States are required by the Charter to abide with Council decisions. When evaluating whether there is an aggression or threat to the peace, the Security Council is in charge.

It suggests ways of adjusting the terms of settlement and encourages parties to a conflict to settle it peacefully. The Security Council occasionally has the option of using sanctions or even approving the use of force in order to preserve or restore global peace and security. Every month, the Security Council’s Presidency changes and rotates.

Economic and Social Council

The Economic and Social Council coordinates, evaluates, dialogues, and recommends economic, social, and environmental policies and implements global development goals.

It oversees subsidiary and expert bodies and acts as the focal point for UN system activities in the areas of economics, society, and the environment. The General Assembly chose its 54 members for consecutive three-year mandates. It serves as the main forum for reflection, discussion, and creative thinking on sustainable development at the UN.

Trusteeship Council

In 1945, Chapter XIII of the UN Charter established the Trusteeship Council to prepare the 11 Trust Territories for self-government and independence. Seven Member States administered these Territories.

All Trust Territories were independent by 1994. Trusteeship Council closed on November 1, 1994. On May 25, 1994, the Council changed its rules to assemble only at the request of a majority of members, the General Assembly, or the Security Council.

International Justice Court

In 1945, Chapter XIII of the UN Charter established the Trusteeship Council to prepare the 11 Trust Territories for self-government and independence. Seven Member States administered these Territories.

The Court advises recognized UN institutions and specialized agencies on legal issues and resolves legal disputes between States in accordance with international law. The ICJ operates under its Statute.

Secretariat

The Secretariat, composed of the Secretary-General and tens of thousands of other UN personnel, executes the General Assembly’s and other UN institutions’ daily activities.

The General Assembly elects the Secretary-General for a five-year term on the Security Council’s recommendation. The Secretary-General represents the Organization’s ideals and speaks for all people, especially the vulnerable.

Internationally and locally recruited UN employees serve in duty stations and on peacekeeping missions all throughout the world. However, promoting peace in a violent world is a risky profession. Numerous courageous men and women have sacrificed their lives for the UN since its founding.
