What is Canada’s International Mobility Program (IMP)?

What is Canada’s International Mobility Program (IMP)?

The International Mobility Program (IMP) lets Canadian companies hire foreign workers on a temporary work visa without having to get an LMIA (Labor Market Impact Assessment) in order to make up for a temporary shortage of workers in the Canadian labor market.

What is an LMIA?

Before hiring a foreign worker, a Canadian company may need to get a document called a “Labour Market Impact Assessment” (LMIA). Before a Canadian company can apply for a work permit, they must first find out if an LMIA is needed or if the job doesn’t need one. If not, the application for a work pass would be turned down.

There are six (6) different kinds of IMP streams.

The International Mobility Program supports the economic and cultural interests of Canada as a whole. It does this by giving out work permits based on the state of Canada’s labor market in certain situations. Here are 6 types of IMP streams for you to choose from:

Stream 1: Post Graduation Work Permit Program

With a post-graduation work permit (PGWP), foreign students can work in Canada for up to three years after they graduate from a Canadian university or college. Graduates may also be able to get permanent residency in Canada with the help of work permits after they finish.

Requirements

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) applicants must be from a country other than Canada, be at least 18 years old, and have finished an 8-month study program in Canada.

Stream 2: Reciprocal Youth Exchange Agreements

The Reciprocal Youth Exchange Agreements include programs like International Experience Canada (IEC), where young people from more than 30 countries can apply to live and work in Canada.

Requirements

To apply for an IEC, your home country or territory must have a deal with Canada that lets you apply for an IEC work pass. If you don’t want to do that, you can use a recognized group (RO). You must also meet the requirements for your home country or region and the pool you want to join.

Stream 3: International Free Trade Agreements

Like the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) and the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (CETA), the International Free Trade Agreements (CETA) allow certain service providers, self-employed people, intra-company transferees, business travelers, and investors to work in Canada without getting a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).

Requirements

Most people who enter the country under an FTA will need a work visa, but they won’t have to fill out an LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment).

Stream 4: Intra-Company Transfer Program

Intra-company transfers to Canada are a popular way for people living abroad to move to the country. Through the Intra-company transfer program, you may be able to get a work visa for Canada if you work for a company that has a parent company, office, subsidiary, or affiliate in Canada. Visit their site to find out more about the Intra-company transfer scheme. Those who are accepted through the Intra-company transfer scheme are given a temporary work visa.

Requirements

Candidates for this program must work for a foreign company and want to work in Canada for the parent, subsidiary, branch, or affiliate of that company. They must also be willing to work in Canada for only a short time.

Stream 5: Bridging Open Work Permit

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) made the Bridging Open Work Permits (BOWP), which let people who want to live in Canada permanently get a legal Canadian work permit. The Bridging Open Work Permit was made so that foreign workers could stay in Canada while their requests for permanent residence were being handled.

Requirements

For the Bridging open work permit, you must live in Canada, have a work permit that is only good for 4 months or less, have a finished e-APR (electronic application for permanent residence), and be the main applicant for your permanent resident application.

Stream 6: Social or Cultural Benefit to Canada Circumstances

Foreign workers who make a big difference to Canada’s economy, social welfare, or society can get work permits without their employers having to fill out a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). The exemptions from the LMIA in this group are the “significant benefit” class.

Requirements

To be eligible, you must have an LMIA-exempt offer, proof that your company paid the compliance fee, and proof that your work helps the economy, society, or culture in a big way.
