Upcoming UK Immigration Changes In April 2024 | UK Immigration 2024

All the information you require on the impending April 2024 immigration changes. In the last several months, the immigration laws in the UK have undergone several modifications. We previously covered the UK’s recent announcement of revisions to its immigration laws in our earlier post.

We will be concentrating on the changes that are expected to occur in April 2024 in this post. Let’s begin as soon as we have the most recent information.

Changes Expected on 4th April 2024 for Sponsored Worker Visas

The minimum wage will increase from £26,200 to £38,700, a roughly 50% increase. However, even if they change jobs, request an extension of their authorization, or apply for settlement through this pathway, current holders of sponsored worker visas are exempt from this new minimum requirement.

Furthermore, the 20% discount offered to minimum-salaried persons on the existing Shortage Occupation List will be eliminated. It will be replaced by a new immigration wage list with fewer positions eligible.

Moreover, after the migration advisory group has finished evaluating them, it is anticipated that these eligible roles will be reduced even further. It is therefore advised that companies offering sponsorship for positions under £38,700 expedite the hiring process. The idea of taking advantage of the current period before the threshold rises is reflected in this recommendation.

In addition, companies ought to examine the status of their present workers, particularly if they are on temporary leave under any of the following categories: student, graduate, youth, high potential individual, or global business mobility visas. Companies should also think about whether they plan to keep employees for the long run or whether compensation would remain the same under the new threshold.

Changes Expected on April 11th, 2024 for Family Visas

It is anticipated that the financial cutoff will increase to £29,000 from £18,600. This boost will encourage British nationals and settled individuals to temporarily bring their dependents to the country. Meeting the financial requirements to sustain the family independently of government assistance is a requirement. But this cutoff was lifted to £34,500, and by early 2025, it will rise progressively to £38,700.

The UK’s new proposal calls for doing away with the shortage occupation list, slashing the 20% pay deduction for shortage occupations, and raising the salary level for the skilled worker visa by 48%.

According to the UK Home Office, steps have been made to ensure that British workers are not undercut. Among these activities are the following:

  • Significant adjustments to the skilled worker path, like a significant increase in the availability of supplemental employment permits
  • Raising the overall salary thresholds for the different possibilities for tradable points
  • Including alternatives for marketable points to safeguard people under transitional agreements

Further Details

The Shortage Occupation List will be replaced on April 4th, 2024, by the immigration salary list for ISL occupations that do not have a 20% going rate reduction. Bloomberg reports that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is coming under increasing pressure from the right wing of his party to lower net migration in front of an expected election later in the year, as it reached a record last year.

It’s noteworthy to note that the Office for National Statistics projects that immigration will have increased the population of the United Kingdom by 6.1 million by mid-2036, from 67 million in mid-2021 to 73.7 million in mid-2036.

Migration will account for nearly all of the population growth. Additionally, the government of Sunak is enforcing new visa regulations to restrict foreign caregivers, especially Indians, from bringing their dependents into the nation. With this action, the disproportionate circumstance from last year—when 100,000 workers brought 120,000 dependents via the care visa route—is intended to be addressed.
