Program duration

Whether or whether they had previously been enrolled in a Master’s program, candidates in this group are eligible for the 32-month window:

  • Beginning on the day an applicant is formally registered in the joint program (including the Master’s component of the program), the number of months of study is determined.
  • straight entry into a Ph.D. program after completing a Bachelor’s degree (no prior Master’s studies);
  • The date of doctorate enrollment is used to compute the number of study months completed.
  • had enrolled in a Master’s program but did not graduate.
Based on the initial Master’s enrollment date, the number of study months completed is determined.
  • have completed the previous two years of full-time study with a first-class average—or the equivalent—as decided by your school. Candidates are urged to get in touch with the school to inquire about what constitutes a first-class average; and
  • To start or finish a doctoral program, a person cannot hold or have held, a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC.

Application Process

How-to-Apply:

The detailed application guidelines that are outlined (below) should be used by applicants; they may be found on the Vanier CGS website. Before the date mentioned above, applicants must complete the following to apply:

  • Inform the UBC graduate program of their choice that they plan to apply for the Vanier CGS.

This is a crucial step since it is necessary for your UBC graduate program to support (nominate) your application in order for it to advance to the university-wide round of the award competition.

  • Up until the end of August 2023, provide official, current transcripts to their UBC graduate program for all post-secondary courses (even those that did not result in a degree, such as exchange or transfer course marks).
  • Request recommendation letters from four people:

Referees submit two leadership reference letters electronically through ResearchNet, and the applicant uploads the letters to his or her electronic application file. The letters evaluate the applicant’s academic excellence, potential for research, and demonstrated potential leadership ability.

Referees are urged to look over Vanier’s EDI resources in order to include EDI considerations in their reference letters.

  • Making a “Vanier-Banting Academic” CV is step four.
  • Complete the additional necessary paperwork, which includes the Voluntary Self-Identification Form for Indigenous Applicants (optional), Personal Leadership Statement, Special Circumstances [if applicable], Research Proposal, and Project References. It is required that you adhere to Vanier’s page restrictions and presentation guidelines.
  • Use ResearchNet to submit a completed Vanier CGS application.
