UK to Double Skilled Worker Visas in Next 5 Years – Major Shift in Immigration Policy

In five years, the UK anticipates a doubling of skilled worker visas. The UK is now more dependent on foreign skilled workers as a result of its labor shortages. Let’s ask the government to alter the skilled worker visa program to see what measures it is taking to combat the rising immigration rates.

A recent projection by the Home Office indicated that there will be a rise in the number of visas for foreign workers over the next five years. This demonstrates how the UK is dependent on skilled immigrants in industries where there is a labor shortage. There has been discussion over how the Visa system affects local employment and pay structures as a result of the surge in net migration and skilled migration occurring at the same time.

Why don’t we go through the predictions for skilled worker visas?

Internal projections predict that the number of visas for foreign workers will double in the UK. Essentially, the purpose of these visas will be to fill positions in in-demand fields like social care. In-country skilled worker visas are expected to increase from 204,000 in 2023–2024 to an astounding 584,000 in 2028–2029.

Furthermore, starting in 2023 or 2024, new entrants will be granted around 200,000 skilled worker visas, all while keeping a compatible trend. It is projected that by 2028/29, the yearly total score of foreign-skilled workers will be 784,000.

Conservative Backbenchers Concerned

Conservative backbenchers are worried about the disclosed estimates. Since net migration increased to a record 66,000 last year, they advise taking action to keep it under control. This endeavor to lower net migration is consistent with the party’s earlier pledge and highlights the growing divergence over visa regulations.

New Proposed Measures from the Home Office

The ministers in charge of the Home Office, Suella Braverman, and Robert Jenrich, have suggested raising the salary threshold for foreign skilled workers. They suggest raising the salary cap to £34,500 to reserve lower-paying positions for residents of the area. Consequently, businesses would be more inclined to spend money on training.

There have been talks about reducing the number of foreign caregivers and tightening regulations for immigrants who want to bring their family members to the UK.

Impact on Local Employment

Opponents contend that if the number of skilled worker visas increases unchecked, firms may be deterred from making investments in technology and training. This can lead to a continued reliance on labor from overseas. Due to the current circumstances, it is imperative to implement a balanced strategy to ensure that immigration laws both promote and enhance the UK economy and safeguard the interests of local workers.
