Who is QS?

QS releases the World University Rankings every year, identifying the best schools based on eight different criteria. Three of these characteristics were newly introduced after QS published its 2024 ranking.

The variables used to rate these universities/institutions are:

  • Academic Reputation
  • Faculty/Student Ratio
  • Citations per Faculty
  • Employer Reputation
  • International Faculty/Student Ratio
  • Sustainability
  • Employment Outcomes
  • International Research Network

Each school ranked in the QS World University Rankings receives an overall score as well as a score for each of the five variables listed above individually.

How does QS develop its ranking system?

QS now ranks institutions based on eight separate factors in its World University Rankings.

The following factors are listed in order of weight:

1. Academic Reputation

A school’s academic reputation is assessed by conducting polls with thousands of people ‘who teach and research’ in higher education.

2. Citations per Faculty

This criterion takes into account how many times a work written or produced by a faculty member at a given school has been cited by another publication in the last five years.

According to QS, ‘citations per faculty’ are used to assess an institution’s credibility in academic writing.

3. Employer Reputation

This is another survey-based criterion. This section of the QS methodology takes into account the views of global companies, who are asked to ‘identify up to ten local and thirty overseas universities that they believe’ will generate some of the most potentially employable graduates.

QS technique prioritizes low student-to-faculty ratios and small class sizes, resulting in a personalized and collaborative learning environment.

4. International Faculty/Student Ratio

Similar to the aforementioned student/faculty ratio component, this element of the QS system takes into account two ratios:

  • The ratio of international faculty members to domestic faculty members.
  • The ratio of international students to domestic students.

Note: Each of the above ratios is weighted at 5%, and QS indicates that these ratios are confirmed against official data whenever feasible.

5. Sustainability

This element assesses an institution and its alumni’s commitment to sustainability.

6. Employment outcomes

These factors assess an institution’s relative capacity to provide a high level of employability for its graduates.

7. International Research Network

According to the QS, a measure of ‘how universities build and sustain research partnerships resulting in internationally co-authored publications to collaborate on tackling the world’s challenges and disseminating vital findings to wider audiences.
