The Port of Entry Letter in Canadian immigration: An Overview

If you want to learn more about the Port of Entry Letter in Canadian immigration, you’ve come to the correct spot. Foreign nationals who have been granted permission to enter Canada as a temporary resident may receive Port of Entry letters. IRCC issues these POE letters to foreign people who are approved for one of the three temporary resident permits or visas listed below. They are as follows.

    1. A study permit.

International students flock to Canada. A Canadian study permit is required to study in Canada. A Canadian Designated Learning Institution (DLI) study permit authorises study. Foreigners applying for study permits should be advised that specific eligibility requirements must be met before applying. During their time in Canada, students must meet specific requirements.

Prepare ahead to guarantee your study visa is accepted before your semester starts because there are several steps to apply for one and processing times vary by nation. Most Canadian post-secondary programmes start in September, January, or May, while others take students earlier.

To ensure they have enough time to obtain the acceptance letter and complete the study permit application, foreign nationals should confirm the start date and application process for their desired schools and programmes well in advance.

    2. A work permit

Foreign nationals who want to work in Canada on a temporary basis typically need a work permit. Work permits are given through two major programmes: the Temporary Foreign Worker Programme (TFWP) and the International Mobility Programme (IMP).

The TFWP provides work permits to candidates whose employers have obtained a favourable Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). A positive LMIA confirms that the employment requires a foreign worker and that no Canadian worker is available.

An IMP work permit does not require a positive LMIA. They do require employers to submit an employment offer through their employer portal.

    3. A super visa

A super visa is for temporary residents from visa-exempt nations.

Moreover, A super visa is a multiple-entry visitor visa designed expressly for the parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. It permits holders to stay in Canada for up to two years without having to renew their status.

The super visa permits qualifying parents and grandparents to stay temporarily in Canada. To stay permanently, parents and grandparents must be nominated for permanent residence by a Canadian child or grandchild.

    Summary

According to IRCC, only temporary residents who filed digitally for one of the three permit or visa types and included their email addresses in their applications would get a Port of Entry Letter.

Visitors to Canada, like other TR applicants, will not receive a POE letter upon arrival. These letters are only sent to persons with an IRCC digital account. They enable them to enter Canada after verifying the identification of the POE letter bearers. As a result, the individual will be authorised to enter Canada and furnish the CBSA with the information needed to give them a permission.

The IRCC further states that if a person does not have a POE letter when they enter Canada through a port of entry, they will not be eligible for a permit. Notably, a Port of Entry letter does not constitute a study or work permit.

Understanding the Port of Entry Letter in Canadian Immigration: Answering the Common FAQs

Foreign nationals preparing to enter Canada have three frequent inquiries.

What is the potential validity of the POE letter?

According to IRCC, POE letters remain valid for the duration of a temporary resident’s super visa, employment, or study permit. However, this is true for International Experience Canada participants. Furthermore, when a temporary resident enters Canada, they can extend their ordinary work permit. IRCC specifies the validity time for each letter it sends to individuals.

The department indicates permit validity in a box labelled “permit validity” on the port of entrance letter itself. This validity date indicates the deadline by which a POE letter holder must be in Canada. POE holders who do not arrive in Canada before the validity time must file a new application to continue their education, work, or enter Canada on a Super Visa.

One cannot change the date of the POE letter’s extension. International Experience Canada candidates who receive POE letters should be aware that they are only valid for twelve months. IEC candidates who take a medical test will receive a 12-month POE letter. However, the validity period shall be determined by either the 12-month valid POE letter or the expiration of a medical exam, whichever occurs first.

What should you do with the Port of Entry letter after you arrive in Canada?

When a temporary resident with POE letters arrives at a Canadian port of entry, they must notify an official immigration authority that their application has been granted. During this time, TRs must submit one of the following:

    • A printed copy of the POE letter.
    • A digital copy of the port of entry letter.
    • Their passports must include a visitor visa (if appropriate).

What are the repercussions of losing, deleting, or destroying a POE letter?

Candidates who lose, damage, or delete their Port of Entry letters must utilise a web form to request that the department resend the letter to them. According to the immigration service, applicants for digital POE letters often acquire them through their IRCC account. Furthermore, temporary residents who are unable to access their original application through their account must notify the immigration service via the web form. If you
