3 Big Announcements: Faster Temporary Resident, New Open Work Permit & More in Canada | IRCC

The steps outlined by Immigration Minister Sean Fraser to support family reunification are discussed in this article. Sean Fraser, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, announced changes to increase family-class immigration on May 26, 2023.

Among the new measures are;

  • First and foremost, quicker processing timeframes for applications for temporary resident visas (TRVs) for spouses
  • Next, spousal (TRV) candidates will have access to new and dedicated processing tools.
  • Moreover, a new open work permit for candidates in the family and spousal classes
  • Lastly, open work permit renewals for those whose permits expire between August 1 and December 31, 2023

Fraser’s Announcements

Fraser opened the statement by stating that relatives from nations that require a visa who filed family class permanent residence PR applications may do so by applying for temporary resident visas (TRV) to join their sponsor in Canada. He claimed that even while most applicants eventually attain permanent status, far too many are still turned away because they’re unlikely to return home.

Fraser went on to state that the backlog of TRV requests for family members whose permanent residency petitions are already being handled had been successfully eliminated by IRCC. More than 98% of requests for spouses and their children eligible to live with their families while processing their PR applications have received approval by IRCC under its new policy regarding spousal TRV applications.

Fraser predicted that in the future, processing times for TRV applications would fall within a 30-day window. Families can visit Canada more swiftly and spend more time with their loved ones. As part of a new effort, the Immigration and Refugee Council of Canada (IRCC) will grant open work permits to spouse applicants and their dependant children who reside in Canada with their sponsor and possess temporary residence status.

As soon as they submit a complete application for permanent residence under the Spouse or Common-Law Partner in Canada Class (SPCLC) or other family class programs, spouses, partners, and dependents are eligible to apply for and acquire an open work permit. These open work permits, which until recently obtained through the Inland Spousal Program, are now available to people who apply from outside of Canada.

A free assisted process will be available starting on June 7th for open work permit holders whose existing permit expires between August 1 and the end of 2023. This will affect roughly 25,000 persons currently residing in Canada and eligible to find employment. This includes applicants for permanent residency and their spouses’ dependents awaiting permanent residency finalization, spouses of international students, and spouses of most temporary workers.

Family Class Sponsorship

The second-largest category of immigration under Canada’s immigration levels plan is family-class immigration. Canada anticipates welcoming 106,500 newcomers in 2023 in the family class category, comprising 78,000 partners, spouses, and children and 28,500 parents and grandparents.

Canada plans to accept 118,000 newcomers by the year 2025 through family-class immigration. Citizens and permanent residents of Canada may sponsor family members to immigrate to the country and apply for permanent residency.

To qualify as a sponsor, you must

  • Initially, you must be a citizen of Canada or a permanent resident.
  • Also, be 18 years or older
  • Next, refrain from incarceration, insolvency, subject to a removal order, or accusation of a serious crime.
  • In addition, you must not have received sponsorship as a spouse in the previous five years.
  • Lastly, assuming they meet the requirements for eligibility, spouses, common-law and ecclesiastical partners, kids, parents, and grandparents are all eligible for sponsorship.
