California State University Application Fee Waiver Process
Upon applying for admission to CSU via Cal State Apply, you are automatically evaluated for an application fee waiver based on the information provided in the application.
A “Check My Fee Waiver Status” option will be available on the Submit Application tab to ascertain your eligibility for an application fee waiver.
California State University Criteria for for Fee Waivers
Eligibility for the application fee waiver requires that you meet the following criteria:
- Firstly, a resident of California for over one year
- Secondly, a U.S. citizen or an individual without lawful immigration status who meets the criteria for an AB540 non-resident tuition exemption
- Thirdly, eligible applicants for the application fee waiver may submit applications to a maximum of four CSU campuses per application term (i.e., fall and spring).
- However, approved waivers are non-transferable to any future or past application periods.
Mistakes to Avoid
Note that the subsequent prevalent mistakes may result in an eligible applicant being denied an application fee waiver:
- Firstly, if you declare yourself as a dependent candidate with a household size of one
- Secondly, if you choose “none” in response to “Which U.S. state/possession do you consider your permanent residence?”
- Applicants who inaccurately misrepresent any of the aforementioned issues will not receive a waiver for the application fee.
- The CSU does not recognize College Board fee waivers or any other external waiver documentation.
Appeals for Application Fee Waivers
If you or your family have undergone a substantial alteration in income, you may be eligible for an application fee waiver appeal. Fee waiver appeals are managed by the respective California State University campuses. You must submit the form to each school in which you wish to apply. The campus will assess your eligibility and provide further steps in the process.
