Eligibility requirements

Age requirements

  • Start a Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship at 18 or older. This means if you apply at 17, you must be 18 before starting your scholarship in semester one.

  • Applications are open to all ages. We prefer applicants under 40.

Required work experience for scholars

Postgraduate and mature undergraduate applicants (not school-leavers) must have relevant job experience. The following criteria must be met for paid, unpaid, or voluntary work experience:

  • One year of full-time work (30+ hours per week), OR
  • Two years of part-time work (29 hours a week).

Preference is given to applicants who show how their intended course of study matches their job experience. We favor applicants who will stay in their field after their scholarship. School leavers and first-year undergraduates are exempt. Two types of scholarship applicants need no work experience:

  • Final-year secondary school applicants, OR
  • Applicants who started postsecondary study directly after graduating from secondary school. OR
  • Employed or unemployed applicants.

Scholars must contribute to their country’s development

Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships invest in developing nation students’ education so they can contribute to their country’s growth by sharing new skills and information. After finishing their education, students must contribute to their country’s social or economic growth for two years. We only accept scholars who have lived in their home country for two years before applying for a scholarship. Applications that clearly state how they will promote their country’s social and economic development after their scholarship are preferred.

Residence requirements in scholar’s home country

  • Before starting study, applicants must live in their home country for two years.
  • Diplomats and their dependents traveling with their parents are exempt from this restriction.

English and academic requirements

Scholarship applicants must meet academic admission and English language requirements set by each school. Verify academic admissions and English language criteria.

You must choose your school and courses while applying for Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships. Before receiving a scholarship offer, applicants don’t need to apply to their preferred school and courses. Scholarship applicants must ensure they can meet the minimal academic and English criteria for their courses. Before applying for a scholarship, check your school’s website for minimal entry requirements.

PhD candidates should find a supervisor ASAP.

PhD scholarship applicants should email New Zealand university PhD supervisors early on. Also, PhD scholarship applicants who are interviewed must show that they have a supervisor or are in talks with one.

General English for postgraduate and undergraduate studies

Each university or education institution establishes the minimum English level for your desired courses; check their website. To study postgraduate, you usually need:

  • 6.5 overall IELTS score, no band below 6.0
  • 90 internet-based TOEFL with 21 writing score
  • A PTE Academic score of 58 with no communication skills score below 50
  • Cambridge Academic English (advanced) score of 176 with no bands below 169.

Undergraduate studies require at least:

  • 6.0 overall IELTS score, no band below 5.5
  • 80 internet-based TOEFL with 21 writing score
  • An overall PTE Academic score of 50 and no communication skills score below 42
  • Cambridge Academic English (advanced) score of 169 with no bands below 162.

Please note that certain courses have higher English entrance requirements. This is a guide only. You must check your course and institution’s English language admittance criteria.

Only selected candidates require English language scores.

Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships for tertiary study do not require English language test scores. Candidates for New Zealand tertiary scholarships must produce an English language test score. This does not apply to Pacific tertiary applicants. Our scholarship selection procedure concludes with English language testing. The following four English competency testing systems are accepted:

  • International English Language Testing System OR
  • The TOEFL tests English as a foreign language. OR

Your university may accept IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic, or Cambridge Academic English (advanced) exam scores from the past year.
