POSITION: Head of Project Development
The post would necessitate great commerciality and a solution-oriented approach, as well as experience delivering complicated projects with various stakeholders and an awareness of the processes and sensitivities of land acquisition.
Responsibilities
- Identifying and acquiring degraded land for tropical forest restoration in Ghana, Sierra Leone, the Ivory Coast, and other high-priority countries.
- Negotiating and obtaining large-scale (10,000 ha+) land concessions from governments, traditional authorities, and local communities for tropical forest restoration
- Negotiating benefit-sharing agreements with governments, traditional authorities, and local communities to ensure equitable and fair distribution of project benefits in a manner that matches our investment’s risk/reward profile.
- Taking new country operations from zero to one – establishing new nation entities and obtaining the requisite government agreements to begin operations.
- Working with technical specialists to create feasibility studies and project design papers in preparation for successful project submissions and verifications.
- Leading a growing project development team and supervising the development of many projects concurrently, including the establishment of work plans, timetables, budgets, and deliverables
Qualifications for Candidates
- Experience working with governments and other stakeholders in Africa, preferably in West Africa. Examples of previous interaction at the highest levels of government in Africa
- Ability to gather, absorb, and interpret information from a variety of fields (national legal frameworks, scientific and socioeconomic data, etc.).
- Significant project development and management experience, including having sourced and developed a significant project in agriculture, renewables, or a government program.
- Negotiating complex agreements with governments, communities, or private parties is a plus.
- A willingness to go to isolated regions in order to produce results on the ground – you’ll need to hop in a pick-up truck to visit potential forest restoration sites.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the charisma required to cultivate the high-level relationships essential for success – You should not be afraid to meet with high-level political figures if necessary.
- degree-level or higher education in a relevant discipline
- Fluency in English (with a preference for French) is required.
