Post Graduate Work Permit Extension | Canada’s New Public Policy

Indeed, according to the recent policy implemented by IRCC, specific international students whose PGWP is expiring or has expired are now eligible to apply for an Open Work Permit. This new policy introduced by the Canadian government in August 2024 offers the opportunity to extend your stay and work in Canada.

Prior to the implementation of this new policy, Post-Graduate Work Permits were granted as a one-time opportunity. Once you obtained one after graduating from a Canadian school, that was the end of the line. It was not possible to renew or extend it. Upon expiration, you would need to either depart from Canada or seek an alternative means to remain.

With the introduction of the New Work Permit Extension policy, certain international graduates may have the opportunity to obtain an open work permit. You may continue to reside in Canada and maintain your employment even after the expiration of your PGWP. A support letter from their province or territory is required, confirming their placement in an Expression of Interest pool or another application process following an initial assessment. Let’s clarify what this means for you in straightforward terms.

Who qualifies for the new work permit extension?

If you belong to one of these groups, you may qualify for the new work permit extension:

  • Individuals Holding Current Work Permits: You currently possess a valid work permit.
  • Recent Expirees: Your work permit was valid until May 7, 2024, but it has since expired.
  • Special Cases: You were permitted to work under certain regulations on May 7, 2024, and you are currently awaiting a response regarding your work permit extension.

If you are an international student in Canada whose Post-Graduate Work Permit has expired or is about to expire, this policy will provide an extension for your permit. To apply, you will require specific documents, such as a support letter from your provincial or territorial authority and a letter of employment from your employer.

1. Verify Fundamental Eligibility

  • You are required to possess a valid work permit that expires on or before December 31, 2024, or,
  • Your valid work permit was held on May 7, 2024, but it has now expired.

Advantages of the Updated PGWP Extension 2024

This new policy brings a sense of enthusiasm for a variety of reasons:

  • No LMIA Required: You might qualify even in the absence of a current job offer or a favourable Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).
  • Extended Stay in Canada: If you qualify, you have the opportunity to remain in Canada for a longer period. This allows you additional time to acquire work experience and adapt to life in Canada.
  • Pathway to Permanent Residency: The Canadian government aims to assist more temporary residents in achieving permanent residency. This policy represents progress toward that goal.
  • Provincial Support: Securing backing from your province or territory places you on their radar for possible nomination for permanent residency.
  • Open Work Permit: The new permit will be an open work permit, offering greater flexibility regarding your employment options in Canada.

What is the connection between this work permit extension and provincial nominee programs?

Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) play a significant role in this new policy. Here is the reason:

  • Provincial Input: Provinces and territories are aware of the types of workers they require. By engaging them in this process, Canada guarantees that the appropriate individuals are positioned in suitable locations.
  • Express Entry Enhancement: Receiving a nomination from a province via their PNP significantly increases your Express Entry score (if you are part of that system).
  • Customized Strategies: Every province has unique requirements. This policy enables them to assist the temporary residents who align most effectively with their local job markets.

Key Points to Keep in Mind

  • Time-Limited Policy: This is a temporary adjustment. This is a unique policy available for a limited time, so be sure to act swiftly if you qualify.
  • There are no assurances: Obtaining the support letter and submitting your application does not ensure that you will receive the new permit. Your application will continue to be reviewed by immigration officials.
  • Keep Updated: Immigration regulations may vary. Continue to monitor our regular updates or the official Canadian immigration website for the latest information.
  • Seek Help if Needed: If you have any uncertainties, it may be beneficial to consult with our licensed immigration consultants. They can assist you in determining your eligibility and provide guidance throughout the process.
