Students from outside of Canada who are studying in Canada can get a work permit after they graduate. For some of them, this permit is one of the most important reasons to study in Canada. How to Apply for Post Graduate Work Permit
For international students in Canada who want to apply for PGWP, there is a process they have to go through. The process is not as hard as in some other countries, and the rate of acceptance is also very good. Here’s what you need to do:
- Step 1: Figure out if you qualify for the PGWP in Canada.
- Step 2: Get your application documents together.
- Step 3: Once you know you qualify for the PGWP, you should apply for it online. You can apply for the PGWP program from inside or outside of Canada.
- Step 4: Make the payment.

Eligibility Requirements for Canada Post Graduate Work Permit
You can only get a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) if you went to one of the designated learning institutions (DLI) for your higher education and are willing to work in Canada for a short time.
- Eligible Post Graduate Work Permit List of Institutions – As we’ve already said, the PGWP is open to students from Canada’s DLI (designated learning institutes) institutions and universities. Quebec’s colleges, technical schools, universities, and CEGEPs are all part of the DLIs. Any of the schools that have been given permission by the state to give degrees for tertiary education. The PGWP does not cover the language course, the private career course, or the self-improvement course. If you haven’t decided where to go to college yet, here is a list of all of them.
- To be eligible for PGWP, you must have studied in Canada full-time for at least 8 months. You can get a PGWP for the time you spent studying a Canadian program online from outside of Canada between spring 2020 and August 31, 2022. Even if you have studied two programs, this is still true.
Checklist for a work permit after graduation
Here is a list of all the documents that you need to send to Immigration. Keep in mind that this is just a general list, and depending on your situation, you may need to send in other proof.
- Photocopies of the passport showing the passport number, the dates the passport was issued and when it will expire, and a Canadian government stamp.
- Identification Proof
- Copy of the current license
- The transcript of the program you finished
- Notice of graduation or letter from the school
- Proof that the fees have been paid.
Application for Post Graduate Work Permit
If you qualify, you can apply for a PGWP whether you are in Canada or not. After you get your final grade from school, you have up to 180 days to apply for your PGWP. For instance, a degree, a transcript, or an official letter. If your study permit runs out before you get your final grades, you have two choices:
If you want to stay in Canada longer, you can fill out an application for a visitor record.
You can leave Canada and apply for your PGWP from a country other than Canada.
Once you know you can get the PGWP, you should fill out an online application. Anyone from Canada or anywhere else can apply for PGWP. IMM 1295 is the form that needs to be filled out. Details about yourself, your preferred language, your passport, how to reach you, where you work in Canada, and where you went to school will be on the form.
Post Graduate Work Permit Fee
Now, all that’s left to do for the Canadian work permit after graduation is pay the application fee. For the PGWP, students have to pay two different kinds of fees. One is 100 CAD for Open work permit holders and 155 CAD for applications. The total cost for a Postgraduate work permit would then be 255 CAD.
Post Graduate Work Permit Processing Time
The PGWP takes between 90 and 110 days to process. The students have to send in their applications within 180 days of the end of your program. If 180 days have passed, students must change their status to that of visitors with visitor visas and then apply for the PGWP. This should be done within 90 days, or else the candidate will have to leave Canada.
Post Graduate Work Permit Rejection
The application for the PGWP can be turned down in some cases, such as:
- If a student who got money from Global Affairs Canada, the Government of Canada Award Program, Canada-Chile Equal Opportunities Scholarships, Canada-China Exchange Programs, or a foreign university with a campus in Canada submits a PGWP application, it can be turned down.
- If you’ve ever gone to school part-time.
- If you’ve taken a break between studies and didn’t tell IRCC why, your Study Permit will have expired and you’ll be out of status. You’ll also need to pay the $200 restoration fee and give IRCC enough reasons why they should approve your application and put you back in status.
- Studied at a school that isn’t eligible for the PGWP.
- If there is no confirmation that the “Degree is Conferred” on your final transcript
- Outside of the 90-day restoration period
- Illegally worked more than 20 hours a week while going to school, worked before classes started, or worked while not in school.
Validity of post-graduation work permit
How long you can work in Canada after you graduate depends on how long your study program was.
- If your program of study was less than 8 months, you can’t get a PGWP.
- If your study program was longer than 8 months but shorter than 2 years, your PGWP is good for up to the same length of time as your study program.
- If your program of study was two years or longer, your PGWP is good for three years.
- If you’ve taken more than one program, you can get a PGWP that is good for the total length of time that each program took.
- If your passport expires before your PGWP, your PGWP will be good until your passport expires.
Post Graduate Work Permit Extension
If you have found a permanent job in Canada or if your employer has changed, you can get your post-graduation work permit extended. You can ask for an extension 30 days before the last one ends. There is also a “bridging permit” for those who have applied for permanent residency but are still waiting to hear from the government. In short, the permit can be renewed or extended, and depending on other circumstances, there are other ways to help the applicants.
