Job Title: Application Security Engineer

Job Description

Nichols Digital Ltd is looking for a security-focused software engineer to become the primary protector of our applications. This role is perfect for a professional who thinks like an attacker to defend against them. You will act as the essential “bodyguard” for our software, identifying vulnerabilities, mentoring developers, and ensuring our applications remain secure from development through deployment.

Your core mission is to shield our web and mobile applications from threats and weaknesses. You will embed security into every phase of the software lifecycle, creating a resilient environment for our technology.

Key Responsibilities

In this vital role, your duties will be comprehensive and impactful:

Integrate Security Early: You will build security into the foundation of our applications by guiding developers on secure coding practices, with a strong focus on Java-based systems and microservices.
Conduct Thorough Testing: Utilizing both automated tools (SAST/DAST) and manual techniques, you will proactively scan and test for security flaws in our code and applications.
Perform Controlled Attacks: You will conduct authorized penetration tests, simulating real-world hacking attempts to discover and help remediate vulnerabilities before they can be exploited.
Manage Vulnerabilities: Constantly monitoring for new threats, you will identify outdated software and weak dependencies, then ensure they are patched or updated promptly.
Foster Team Collaboration: Working closely with development and DevOps teams is crucial. You will collaborate to elevate the overall security posture of the entire organization.
Drive Continuous Improvement: You will stay ahead of the latest security threats and best practices, consistently recommending necessary updates and strategic fixes.
Ensure Deployment Safety: You will verify that all applications maintain their security integrity, whether they are deployed in the cloud or on-premises servers.
Participate in Strategic Reviews: Furthermore, you will actively participate in code reviews, risk assessments, and planning sessions to identify potential security risks at the earliest possible stage.

Your Profile and Qualifications

Essential Requirements:

A degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a similar field.
At least five years of hands-on experience in application security, DevSecOps, or a closely related area.
Strong Java programming skills and practical experience with frameworks like Spring and Spring Boot.
Proven hands-on experience with security testing tools and their integration into CI/CD pipelines.
Deep knowledge of web and mobile security threats, including the OWASP Top 10 and SANS Top 25.
Familiarity with core web protocols like HTTP/HTTPS, modern authentication methods, and secure API design principles.
Proficiency in a scripting language such as Python, JavaScript, or Shell.
Ideal Mindset and Soft Skills:

We are looking for an honest and accountable individual with a continuous learning mindset. Excellent communication skills in English are essential for explaining complex security concepts to diverse teams.

Bonus Qualifications:
