POSITION: Senior Advocacy and Media Officer

Company Overview

Sabre Education is a reputable NGO that has more than 20 years of expertise in the Early Childhood Education (ECE) field. We collaborate closely with the Ghana Education Service to provide a variety of effective training programs for teachers and other pertinent entities within the agency.

Position Overview

  • Reports to: Senior Manager of Advocacy and Policy Engagement
  • Location: Accra, with trips to various regions of the country.

Job Objective

The Senior Advocacy and Media Officer aids in the development, oversight, and execution of Sabre Education’s advocacy and communications plan aimed at enhancing visibility and showcasing Sabre’s contributions and effects in Ghana on local, national, and pan-African stages, focusing on the media, government entities, civil society collaborators, and the general populace.

The Officer will be instrumental in facilitating local and national media interaction, creating on-site communication materials (such as print, radio, TV, and offline content), and enhancing event visibility. He/she will directly assist the Advocacy Department and collaborate closely with the Communications Team and other Units.

This is a full-time role, and the position will involve some travel to project sites in Ghana for activities related to Sabre Education.

Main Duties

  • Assist in creating and executing the advocacy strategy.
  • Assist in developing, organizing, and executing advocacy initiatives.
  • Involve policymakers, key stakeholders, Sabre team members, and external partners in executing advocacy initiatives.
  • Establish and uphold strategic connections with public officials in all pertinent agencies or departments related to Sabre’s activities.
  • Align the advocacy efforts with CSOs, NGOs, and government collaborators.
  • Assist in creating various advocacy and communication materials, such as posters and reports, in partnership with the Communications Team.
  • Support for Media Engagement and Communications
  • Create media approaches and enhance media relationships to boost the organization’s visibility in Ghana.
  • Draft talking points and briefs for personnel regarding media interactions and appearances.
  • Compose and revise press releases, opinion pieces, feature articles, etc.
  • Collaborate with different teams to create premium, focused content for multiple platforms (print, digital, broadcast).
  • Assist in creating communication materials such as newsletters, videos, reports, website content, and social media posts.
  • Create instruments to monitor advocacy and media results and assess effectiveness.
  • Create consistent reports, updates, and briefings for both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate closely with the Communications teams in Ghana and the UK to assist in executing Sabre’s communications strategy in Ghana.
  • Discover and propose media stories to media organizations that coincide with Sabre’s advocacy objectives and organizational priorities.
  • Aid in strategic communication regarding important campaigns, policy inputs, and Sabre’s diverse initiatives.
  • Work alongside MEL colleagues to record media and advocacy results, aiding in the creation of quarterly and annual reports and strategic analyses.

Necessary Skills or Experience

Educational Background and Expertise 

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Communication or a similar discipline. A Master’s degree in a related field will be a significant benefit.
  • At least five (5) years of applicable work experience in media, advocacy, or communications.
  • Experience collaborating with NGOs, government bodies, or within the international development field.

Understanding, Competencies, and Capabilities 

  • Capacity to assist local, national, and global advocacy efforts.
  • Capacity to represent the organization in multiple forums.
  • Robust connections with prominent media organizations in Ghana.
  • Deep knowledge of Ghana’s education policies and/or early childhood development environment.
  • The capability to convert intricate policy and educational material into engaging media and public stories.
  • Capabilities in graphic design or multimedia production
  • Creative, dynamic, problem-solving mindset toward tasks
  • Experience in creating offline communications and materials for non-digital settings (e.g. printed materials, radio broadcasts, community activities).
  • Capability to independently manage communications execution in Ghana, while coordinating efficiently with a remote digital team based in the UK.
  • Proficient in computer applications (Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint), Outlook, project management software (Asana), Google Suite).
