Lively Minds calls For Job Applications

Job Title: Director of Finance

Organization Profile

Lively Minds is a dynamic international NGO with a powerful mission: to deliver quality early childhood development to millions of rural preschoolers in Ghana and Uganda by empowering their parents. We combine proven, evidence-based programs with innovative, rigorous systems to achieve scale in a cost-effective and sustainable manner. Our work transforms communities by unlocking the potential of caregivers as their children’s first educators.

Role Purpose

We seek a strategic and hands-on Director of Finance to provide outstanding financial leadership and stewardship. This senior role carries full responsibility for the organization’s financial strategy, robust controls, donor compliance, and risk management. You will ensure our financial operations directly support and enable program delivery across all countries of operation. Crucially, this is both a leadership and a “doing” role; the ideal candidate will confidently execute tasks personally while mentoring their team, embodying a proactive, ‘can-do’ attitude.

Key Responsibilities

Your leadership will span strategic oversight and meticulous operational management. Core duties include:

Strategic Leadership & Financial Planning

  • Develop and lead the organization’s financial strategy to ensure long-term sustainability and alignment with our mission.
  • Advise the CEO and Board on financial performance, risk management, and strategic scenario planning.
  • Build long-term financial models and cash flow forecasts, including commercial modeling for new initiatives.

Financial Management, Control & Compliance

  • Oversee all financial operations: accounting, treasury, payroll, and banking.
  • Ensure accurate, timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial closes.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal financial controls across all offices and projects.
  • Guarantee full compliance with institutional donor requirements and charity accounting standards (SORP).
  • Lead the annual organizational audit and all donor financial audits.

Budgeting, Performance & International Oversight

  • Lead the annual budgeting process and monitor performance against budgets and KPIs.
  • Support budget holders with clear forecasting and financial decision-making.
  • Ensure strong financial management for international operations, including multi-currency handling and expansion into new countries.

Risk Management & Team Leadership

  • Identify and manage financial risks, leading fraud prevention and anti-money laundering efforts.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the finance team to achieve operational excellence.
  • Promote a culture of financial integrity, accountability, and literacy across the organization.

Essential Skills & Experience

Proven experience as a Finance Director or Head of Finance with full autonomy, including board reporting.

  • A fully qualified accountant (ACCA, CIMA, ACA, CPA, or equivalent).
  • Senior-level finance experience within an INGO, charity, or multi-country organization, preferably with Global South operations.
  • Demonstrable expertise in institutional donor compliance, grant management, and leading audits.
  • Strong skills in budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and managing multi-currency environments.
  • Excellent leadership and team management abilities, with skill in communicating complex financial information to non-finance stakeholders.
  • High integrity, sound judgment, and a deep commitment to NGO values.

Desirable Attributes

  • Experience building the capacity of local partners in the Global South.
  • Knowledge of risk management frameworks and experience with financial system digital transformation.
  • Familiarity with grant management software and cloud-based accounting tools.
  • Understanding of legal and tax considerations for INGOs operating without in-country entities.
  • Personal or professional experience living and working in Sub-Saharan Africa.
