POSITION: Director of Works and Physical Development
Koforidua Technical University is seeking a Director of Works and Physical Development to lead our Works and Physical Development Directorate. If you have served as Deputy Director of Works in a university or a comparable grade in a similar organization for at least six years, and you possess strong leadership, organizational, and project management skills, this role offers the opportunity to supervise contracts, manage buildings and grounds, advise on land use, and shape the physical development of a university with 14,000 students and growing.

As Director of Works and Physical Development, you will not simply manage projects; you will implement all infrastructural projects, ensure cost efficiency and quality, and confirm that designs conform to current national and international standards.
Your Mission
You will serve as the Head of the Works and Physical Development Directorate, reporting directly to the Vice Chancellor. Your responsibilities include supervising all works and contracts to ensure construction and renovations meet industry standards and specifications. You will also advise on procurement of consultancy services, oversee construction contract compliance, manage university buildings, roads, drains, parks, gardens, and their designs, plus advise on land use control. Additionally, you will advise the Vice Chancellor and University Council on land and development matters while performing other duties assigned by the Vice Chancellor.
Key Responsibilities
Your role spans contract supervision, procurement advice, project management, facility maintenance, land use advice, and strategic counsel. Here is what you will tackle:
Contract Supervision
- You will supervise all works and contracts to ensure construction and renovations align with prevailing industry standards and specifications.
- Ensuring contractors deliver quality work on time and within budget.
Procurement Advice
- You will advise on the procurement of consultancy services, helping the university select qualified architects, engineers, and project managers.
Construction Contract Management
- You will oversee construction contract management, ensuring compliance and due delivery of projects.
- Resolving disputes or delays before they escalate.
Facility & Grounds Management
- You will manage and maintain university buildings, roads, drains, parks, gardens, and their design drawings.
- Scheduling preventive maintenance to extend asset life.
Land Use Advice
- You will advise on the management and control of land use, protecting university property boundaries and optimizing space utilization.
Strategic Counsel
- You will advise the Vice Chancellor and University Council on land and development matters, supporting long term planning.
- Performing any other duties assigned by the Vice Chancellor.
What You Bring to the Role
Qualifications & Professional Memberships
- A minimum of a Master’s degree in a Built Environment profession.
- Relevant professional qualifications such as membership in the Ghana Institute of Architects (GIA), Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE), Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS), or Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
Experience
- Service as Deputy Director of Works and Physical Development in a university or comparable grade in a similar organization for at least six years.
- Alternatively, service in a relevant field in industry, commerce, or public service with a minimum of twenty years of relevant post qualification experience.
Skills & Attributes

Terms of Appointment
- The appointment is full time for four years in the first instance. The university may renew it for only one more term of four years, subject to satisfactory performance, provided no part of the second term enters your compulsory retirement age.
- Eligible candidates must be able to complete at least a four year tenure before attaining the age of 60 years.
