POSITION: Associate Research Manager
Position Overview
The Associate Research Manager will mainly oversee the execution of an international consumer protection survey, focusing on data gathering in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Uganda. They will manage comprehensive survey activities—covering instrument adaptation, field team supervision in partnership with IPA Country Office and external survey firm personnel, data quality control, and analysis and distribution.
The Associate Research Manager will additionally assist with various tasks within IPA’s Consumer Protection Research Initiative and overall Financial Inclusion program, which may involve creating initiative-specific outputs and activities, fostering regulatory partnerships, and working with external academic researchers on certain projects to enhance technical research capabilities. The position will be overseen by the Associate Director of the Consumer Protection Research Initiative, with guidance and support from a (Senior) Research Manager and additional staff from the Financial Inclusion Program.
Duties
- Oversee the design, preparation, and data gathering for CPRI digital finance consumer protection surveys in 10 nations. Supervise collaboration with IPA country offices and survey companies, guarantee compliance with standardized tools and protocols, track field advancements, and maintain data integrity.
- Oversee data analysis, integration, and distribution of survey results. Generate insights pertinent to policy, compose reports and briefs, and assist in cross-country comparisons and public goods.
- Collaborate with the larger CPRI team and outside researchers. Align with strategic objectives, contribute to the development of the research pipeline, facilitate cross-project knowledge sharing and documentation, assist in regulator interactions, and partner with academic PIs on specific research endeavors to enhance technical research capabilities.
Qualifications
- Specialized education in economics, public policy, statistics, data science, international development, or a highly relevant area (e.g., Master’s degree or similar experience).
- Demonstrated mastery of comprehensive, large-scale survey research: development of instruments, sampling/pilots, management of field teams, and stringent data quality assurance across various countries.
- Robust quantitative abilities and coding expertise (including Stata) to organize, examine, and record extensive survey datasets with reproducible processes.
- Experience in managing cross-country projects and vendors (e.g., survey companies and national offices), ensuring timely and quality delivery.
- Capacity to convert evidence into concise, policy-oriented outputs (reports/briefs) and comparative analyses appropriate for public distribution.
- Engage with policy stakeholders—preferably financial sector regulators—and collaboratively develop practical tools (such as complaints dashboards, pricing monitors) and conduct workshops.
- Exceptional skills in planning, communication, and stakeholder management; adept at working across different time zones and cultures while addressing field challenges within strict deadlines.
- Proficiency in English and willingness to travel up to 25%.
