How to Find Cheap Travel Insurance

You probably don’t want anything to go wrong on your trip, whether you’re going somewhere for business or for fun. If anything unexpected happens, you probably want to be protected. Understanding travel insurance and why you need it will help you save money and travel safely.

Travel Insurance Coverage

Travel insurance coverage varies. Know your risks and needs before buying insurance. A la carte coverage may be cheaper than a larger package.

Travel insurance has seven main types:

1. 24-Hour Help: This is a feature of many travel insurance plans. You can call a hotline at any time of day or night to do anything. Thus, from finding a lawyer or doctor to booking a flight after missing a connection.

2. Accidental Death/Dismemberment: This insurance can pay out a lump sum if someone dies because of an accident while on a trip. This insurance also covers the loss of hearing, speech, eyesight, or an appendage.

3. Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation: This type of insurance can pay for your transportation to a hospital if you are hurt or sick and need to get there. It can also pay for the return of a person’s body after death.

4. Baggage and personal belongings: If your personal belongings or luggage get damaged, lost, or stolen during your trip, you can get your money back. You may already have some coverage through your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance. Check to see how much coverage you have and compare it to the options for travel insurance.

5. Rental Car Coverage: This coverage might help if you get into an accident while driving a rental car. Medical and liability coverage, on the other hand, aren’t usually included.

6. Travel medical insurance: This type of insurance usually doesn’t cover routine medical exams or pre-existing conditions, but it will cover injuries and illnesses that happen on your trip and are serious enough to need medical attention right away.

7. Trip Cancellation or Interruptions: This coverage pays for non-refundable and pre-paid expenses if you have to cancel or interrupt your trip for a reason covered by the policy.

Check your credit card and health insurance before deciding on travel insurance. Some credit cards offer travel insurance. Your health insurance may cover specific medical events, but check what services are in and out of the network or not covered.

Considerations for Cost

Travel insurance value is subjective. Comprehensive travel insurance costs 5%–7% of the trip expense. If you’re paying 8% or more, make sure you need most of your policy’s features.

Many things affect travel insurance prices. Your age, trip length, and a number of travelers will be considered, as well as your total trip cost.

Deductibles and reimbursement rates also affect insurance costs. Higher deductibles make the policy cheaper upfront, but they cost more to claim.

Finally, travel insurance rates are regulated. Once you select the right travel insurance policy, it cannot be sold at a cheaper price.

Travel Insurance Sources

You probably already know how to get the best deal on other kinds of insurance by shopping around. Travel insurance is another good thing to shop around for. Here are four ways that you can get travel insurance:

Credit Cards. Credit cards may offer travel protection if you schedule a vacation or hire a car. Coverage is limited and non-customizable.

Travel Agency or Booking Site. When you book different parts of your trip through these third parties, they may offer travel insurance as an extra. But there is usually only one choice, and that choice is often very limited and may not be a good deal. Again, it’s usually not possible to make changes.

Travel insurer. Directly purchasing travel insurance from the insurance company limits your options to that company’s plans.

Compare Travel Insurance. Travel insurance comparison sites display multiple prices depending on your travel criteria. Using a comparison service instead of visiting travel insurance company websites saves time. A comparison portal lets you sort insurance by price and benefits. Finally, since pricing are set by law, buying a policy on a comparison site or straight from the insurance company costs the same.

Spending less

Below are some more strategies to save money.

Consider a Travel Medical Insurance Policy: If you don’t need trip cancellation or trip interruption insurance, a stand-alone travel medical insurance policy may save you money.

Don’t Insure Items That Can Be Refunded: Insurance will only pay for costs that have already been paid for and can’t be taken back. For example, if you book a week at a $3,500 hotel and there is a $500 cancellation fee, your travel insurance will only cover $500 if the hotel gives you back the rest.

Don’t Get Extra Coverage: It might seem like a good idea to get $1,000 worth of coverage for lost items and bags. But what if all the things you own are only worth $250? Make sure you need all of the coverage you’re paying for.

Cover more trips. If you only take a few trips a year, it makes sense to get separate coverage for each one. If you travel a lot, you might want to think about getting annual travel insurance.

Prioritize Quality Over Quantity

Balance cost and coverage while choosing travel insurance. Cheap travel insurance is easy to get, but good coverage is harder.

you should not skimp on travel medical coverage. Medicare and most US health insurance are not accepted abroad. If you don’t carry valuables or have credit card coverage, you may not need baggage, rental car, or trip cancellation insurance.

Learnings

Proper planning reduces trip complications. The longer you drive, the more probable anything will happen. Find affordable travel insurance for your next vacation to be prepared for everything.
