How many hours will I be allowed to work as an international student in Canada or USA
Studying abroad can be very expensive for international students and even residents of the country. However, working while studying is very helpful. This will ease the cost of education and also give you some work experience.
Most international students wonder if they can be granted the opportunity to work part-time. The answer to this is that you can work part time. You must know the requirements and restrictions concerning your visa.
TYPE OF VISAS DETERMINING WORKING GUIDELINES FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
F1 visa holders for international students and the opportunity to work hours
International students who hold this visa have the opportunity to work. The work should be on campus or in a specific training program. Some on campus jobs includes working at the cafeteria, the library or student centre. As an F1 visa holder, you should note that, you can only work for 20 hours per week when school is in session. Nevertheless, when school is on holidays, you can take a full time job if you will take up another class during the next semester. Your job offer should not displace a citizen of the US. As an international student, you need to seek guidance and clearance from International Student Office before accepting any employment.
Optional practical training for international students and the opportunity to work hours
This program permits international students to work off campus during and after their studies. After you have enrolled in school for 9 months, you should be issued with the Employment Authorization Document (EAD). This program enables you to work for 12 months. The requirements for this is that, the job offered to you must match that of your major, you must apply for the OTP program before completing your degree. International students reading courses in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are eligible to ask for an extension of the OPT.
Curricular practical training for international students and the opportunity to work hours
The CPT is a program that gives the international student a work experience relating to their course. This is based on an agreement with the school.
Severe Economic Hardship for some international students
Students who are extremely marginalised in their finances are eligible to work outside campus for 20 hours a week. You need to prove that you are really in need of money based on circumstances which were not predictable. For instance, loosing your scholarship or grants from your sponsors. Also you should prove that your academic records are outstanding. Again you should prove that the jobs on campus do not meet your expenses. Last but not least you should have received an offer letter of employment .
