Highest-Paying Jobs in Belgium for Foreigners in September 2023

If you’re thinking of moving to Belgium, don’t be fooled by its modest size. The country is often considered to be the “heart of Europe,” with a population of around 11.5 million people, including an estimated 220,000 expats, so you’ll be in good company.

Belgium is a federal state divided into three regions: Flemish (in the north), Brussels-Capital Region, and Walloon (in the south). With three official languages, the country is multilingual. The Flemish community and the capital city of Brussels speak Dutch, while the Walloon region speaks French. A small percentage of the population speaks German. Although English is widely understood, you will need to learn the language of your specific community in order to get by.

While beer, chocolate, and waffles are synonymous with the country, you should also be aware that Belgium is a cultural hotspot. It has historical cities, gorgeous architecture, quiet countryside, decadent cuisine, and a vibrant arts scene.

Belgium Job Opportunities

Belgium’s work market is competitive, and language abilities are in high demand. Foreign employees who are multilingual, or who speak at least one of the country’s official languages, have a better chance of finding work.

Service and high-tech businesses are traditionally concentrated in the northern Flanders region, while coal and steel production is concentrated in the southern Flanders region.

The majority of Belgians work in service industries such as banking, law, media, retail, tourism, and transportation. The industry has a limited number of employment openings.

  • accountants

How to Find Work in Belgium

In Belgium, the application process is comparable to that of the United Kingdom: an application form, a two-page CV and cover letter (in the relevant language), and references. After that, there will be an interview.

It is critical that you write your application in the appropriate language, whether Dutch, French, or German, depending on where you intend to live and work. Some organizations may accept applications submitted in English, but you should verify with them first.

Applying for jobs in your own country is recommended, especially if you are a non-EU citizen. If you are currently residing in Belgium, you can register with recruiting agencies such as Adecco, Randstad, and Michael Page; there are also sector-specific agencies, a list of which can be found at Golden Pages Belgium.

Belgium’s four regions each have their own public employment office. At Actiris (Brussels), VDAB (Flanders), Le Forem (Walloon), and ADG (German community), you can get professional career advice and seek employment and training courses.

There are many multinational organizations in Belgium, therefore another option is to work for one of these organizations in your home country and subsequently transfer to offices in Belgium.

Belgian visas

Non-EU citizens, including British citizens, will need a visa and/or work permit.

Short-term visas are issued for stays of less than 90 days, whereas long-term visas are issued for stays of more than 90 days. The latter of these necessitates the acquisition of a work permit, which your prospective employer must typically apply for – frequently a year in advance.

EU citizens have the following rights:

  • move to another EU country to work without a work permit
  • enjoy equal treatment with citizens in terms of access to employment, working conditions, and all other social and tax benefits
  • remain in the country even after employment ends.

EU nationals who plan to stay in Belgium for less than three months should register with the appropriate municipal government upon arrival. If you want to stay for more than three months, you must apply to your local authority for a registration certificate.

EU citizens may also have their health and social security coverage transferred to their host country, and after three years in Belgium, they may seek permanent residency.
